Professor Judith Hall OBE
Professor of Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine. Phoenix Project Lead
Overview
I am Professor of Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine at Cardiff University. I also lead the Phoenix Project, a University partnership with the University of Namibia that seeks to tackle poverty and promote health.
I have extensive research interests, including anaesthesia for the developing world, translational sepsis research, mechanisms of anaesthetic sedation/analgesia and postoperative blood loss.
I am a former Welsh Woman of the Year, and have won numerous awards, including an OBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for founding the Critical Care Alliance, services to academic anaesthesia, founding the Mothers of Africa charity, and services to Africa.
I am an experienced broadcaster and regular guest on Namibian television and radio through my work with the Phoenix Project. I also commentate on medical matters and African affairs in the UK media.

Teaching
I run a major programme of undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the Cochrane Simulation Centre, amounting to 40 postgraduate courses and with undergraduate courses running throughout the academic year.
Biography
Involvement in education tools and courses
- In 2006, I developed the first medical simulation centre in the School of Medicine in Cardiff University. I ran the first courses and took part in the development and delivery of all the scenarios.
- I developed the floor plan and the detailed specifications for Cardiff University’s new Cochrane Simulation Centre. This involved considerable early benchmarking with other simulation centres in England.
- In the absence of any central funding for early simulation development, I worked closely with industry in the UK to eventually obtain a sponsor for the unit. The early development of commercial courses led to a surplus which was entirely re-invested in the simulation centre.
- I developed an educational programme for educators seeking to teach in the simulation centre. This course is now running four times a year, thus enabling a major multi-professional, multi-disciplinary faculty to be developed.
- I developed the first ever all-Wales simulation course. This is the Acute Care Module, for Year Five students. I built two teams to develop the module, one focusing on educational outputs and the other on simulation delivery. After extensive discussion with other providers throughout Wales, I rolled it out successfully to every hospital in Wales. All 350 students in Wales are now exposed to the module.
