Overview

I am Lecturer in Global Media and Communications at Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media and Culture. My research interests include Media and Nationalism, Visibility, Public Diplomacy, Nation Branding, Media Representation, Social Movements, and Media and Globalisation. I am interested in how nationhood is mediated, for both domestic and foreign audiences, in order to advance political, economic and cultural goals. My focus is on the different tensions and struggles that arise during this process, especially (but not exclusively) in the context of Latin American societies. Recently, I have also started looking at media representations of violence at times of protest.

My research has been published in the The International Journal of Press/Politics, International Journal of Communication, International Communication Gazette, Nations and Nationalism, Geopolitics, Place Branding and Public Diplomacy, Revista Trama Interdisciplinar (Brazil), Liinc em Revista (Brazil), Revista Internacional de Comunicación y Desarrollo (Spain), and CommonsRevista de Comunicación y Ciudadanía Digital (Spain). I am also author or co-author of book chapters and reports in my areas of interest. I was assistant editor for the reader Globalization and the Media (Routledge, 2019, with Professor Terhi Rantanen) and I recently authored the monograph Media and the Image of the Nation during Brazil's 2013 Protests (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020).

I won the 2021 Anthony D. Smith Award to outstanding article published in Nations and Nationalism for ‘Digital nationalism: Understanding the role of digital media in the rise of ‘new’ nationalism’ (with Sabina Mihelj), and I was runner-up in the 2022 Jay Blumler Best Article Award of the International Journal of Press Politics for 'The instrumental mediated visibility of violence: The 2013 protests in Brazil and the limitations of the protest paradigm.' I also received an Honourable Mention in the 2021 ICA Annual Conference for best paper in Public Diplomacy Interest Group, for ‘Soft Power and Media Power: How Foreign Correspondents react to Brazil’s Nation Branding Initiatives’.

I am currently Vice-Chair of the Popular Media & Culture Division of the International Communication Association.

Before joining Cardiff University, I was a postdoctoral researcher at Loughborough University (working with Professor Sabina Mihelj) and a lecturer at Brunel Univesity.

I hold a PhD in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), a double MSc/MA in Global Communications from the LSE and the University of Southern California, and a BA in Journalism from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Before becoming an academic, I worked almost a decade as a journalist for newspapers and television stations in Latin America. I also worked for Ogilvy Public Relations on different projects related with Nation Branding for several public and private organisations.

I have contributed with interviews or op-ed pieces to the media, including BBC, Al Jazeera, France 24, Monocle, UOL (Brazil), MegaNoticias (Chile), Canal 13 (Chile), Radio Duna (Chile), NTN24 (Colombia) and The Conversation, among others.

My languages are English (fluent), Spanish (native), Portuguese (intermediate) and German (basic).

Research

My research interests include Media and Nationalism, Visibility, Public Diplomacy, Nation Branding, Media Representation, Social Movements, and Media and Globalisation. I am interested in how particular representations of the nation are created and communicated through the complex contemporary media space, for both domestic and foreign audiences. My focus is on the different tensions and struggles that arise during this process, especially (but not exclusively) in the context of Latin American societies. Recently, I have also started looking at media representations of violence at times of protest.

I won the 2021 Anthony D. Smith Award to outstanding article published in Nations and Nationalism for ‘Digital nationalism: Understanding the role of digital media in the rise of ‘new’ nationalism’ (with Sabina Mihelj), and I was runner-up in the 2022 Jay Blumler Best Article Award of the International Journal of Press Politics for ' The instrumental mediated visibility of violence: The 2013 protests in Brazil and the limitations of the protest paradigm.' I also received an Honourable Mention in the 2021 ICA Annual Conference for best paper in Public Diplomacy Interest Group, for ‘Soft Power and Media Power: How Foreign Correspondents react to Brazil’s Nation Branding Initiatives’.
