Research
My expertise is in extracting, manipulating and analysing electronic health records from primary and secondary care held in CPRD and SAIL, using data science and statistical tools and techniques.
Current projects include:
- establishing the impact of COVID-19 on the health of domiciliary care workers in Wales; and
- machine learning with primary care data to predict the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes in children.
Other projects have included analysing: the relationship between antibiotic prescribing and deprivation; assessments of optometrists and consultant ophthalmologists in the process of certification for vision impairment; the effectiveness of high-cost drugs used in treating cystic fibrosis; the long-term consequences of urinary tract infections in children, and, separately, by older people; and the provision of health services to patients with cerebral palsy.
Teaching
I assist students and staff in Data Clinics and act as a facilitator for case based learning in the MBBCh Medicine course.
