Mrs Karen Jones
Senior Lecturer: Physiotherapy
Overview
I am a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University and have been at the School of Healthcare Sciences since July 2004. Prior to this I worked as a Physiotherapist in the National Health Service specialising in the area of adult neurological rehabilitation.
In the realm of Learning and Teaching I have had various organisational responsibilities including being Module Leader at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. I teach across several disciplines however my particular teaching interests are physiology, neurology and neural plasticity which I teach on undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
I have extensive experience of Programme Management at Masters (level 7), with a particular interest in International student experience and supporting their academic development and Programme Manager for MSc in Physiotherapy.
I have experience of programme validation at both undergraduate and postgraduate, specifically relating to the physiotherapy programmes that were established 2007, 2012 and 2014. More recently (2015-16), I carried out the role of Project Manager for a review of all Postgraduate provision across the School of Healthcare Sciences.
As Director for Engagement (UK) 2018-2020 I led on the development of a CPD Framework for the School and initially worked with other Schools in the College in developing a College level CPD Strategy. I also led on development of the online platform to showcase School Engagement and Civic Mission activity Civic Mission
In line with my research interests
- I was Joint Chair (2010- 2015) and was an active member of the Physiotherapy working group for the European Huntington's Disease Network (EHDN).
- i was stratgic lead for a co-produced project with the MS Society (Wales) involved in development of a 16 week exercise programme for people with MS.
- I am currently exploring motivations of international students to study at Masters level and the factors that influence their academic ouitcomes.

Research
Main research interests
Most recently (2019-2021) I was strategic lead for a co-produced partnership/ collaboration with MS Society (Wales) and Specialist Physiotherapists at University Hospital for Wales. This included development and implementation of a 16 week bespoke exercise programme for people with MS and included the opportunity for BSc and MSc student involvement in research and evaluation of outcomes.
Exercise in Huntington's Disease. Over the past couple of years I have been involved with Professor Monica Busse and her ground breaking work in this area.
- 2009 compilation of an exercise DVD for people with HD as part of a PhD study
- 2011/12 blind assessor in the COMMET study (Can community supported exercise benefit subjective wellbeing, physical activity levels and abilities in people with Huntington's disease? A randomised feasibility study and process evaluation) which involved an exercise intervention in local gyms
- 2012/13 physiotherapy intervention for TRAIN HD (Task-related training in Huntington Sacircs Disease: a home based intervention study)
- 2013/14 Blinded assessor for EXERT HD (Involving max exercise testing)
- 2014/15 Blinded assessor for ENGAGE HD
I also have an interest in the area of Manual Handling/ Therapeutic handling in which I carried out my own MSc and am furthering this work through supervision of other Master's students.
Finally another theme within my research profile is trunk/ spinal stability re-education, a rehabilitation tool that spans all specialities. In this area I supervise both undergraduate and post graduate students, the findings of which have been presented at various National and International conferences.
Grants
I have some experience of small grant applications (2007- £500) and more recently a co applicant for the successful TRAIN HD grant ( £99,230).
Publications
In addition to the publications listed, I have been a significant contributor to the following publications:

Teaching
Since starting work as an academic 2004 I have taught across many aspects of the BSc Physiotherapy programme at all levels (4-6). This includes Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics, Clinical Skills and Research.
My specialist area of interest is Adult Neurology which is my focus of teaching at BSc and MSc levels.
I also have a passion for improving the student experience and supporting academic development in students, particularly those from outside the UK. To this end I have co-led on several innovations, including group personal tutoring and peer reviewed assessment.
