Attic Inscriptions Online

In 2012 I launched Attic Inscriptions Online (AIO), www.atticinscriptions.com, with the aim of making up-to-date English translations of the inscriptions of ancient Attica (Athens and its surrounding region), a hugely important but hitherto notoriously inaccessible, body of evidence, freely available to all. It has since expanded and developed, supported inter alia by small grants from Cardiff, Utrecht and Durham Universities, and in 2015/6 a grant from the Mellon Foundation, for a project in collaboration with Heidelberg, Tufts and Duke Universities (http://www.uni-heidelberg.de/hcch/forschung/mellon.html).

More recently it has also provided access to up-to-date Greek texts and selected images of the inscriptions translated. From 2017/8-2020/1 (extended on a no additional cost basis to 2021/2) I was Principal Investigator on an AHRC-funded project on Attic Inscriptions in UK Collections (AIUK): http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/news/view/918129-ancient-athens-revealed-through-its-inscriptions.

See also: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/history-archaeology-religion/research/impact/transforming-access-to-the-inscriptions-of-ancient-athens-and-attica.

I am currently (2023) a member of the AIO Editorial Committee and Advisory Board and am working inter alia on a project to complete coverage on AIO of the key inscriptions of the Attic demes (local communities).

Since 2016 I have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
