Mae gan yr Athro Alan Felstead raddau o Brifysgol Caergrawnt, Prifysgol Warwick a Choleg Imperial Prifysgol Llundain. Mae wedi dal swyddi yng Ngholeg Nuffield, Prifysgol Rhydychen a Phrifysgol Caerlŷr. Ers 2006 mae wedi bod yn Athro Ymchwil yn Ysgol y Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol, Prifysgol Caerdydd. Mae hefyd wedi bod yn Gyd-gyfarwyddwr Sefydliad Ymchwil a Data Cymdeithasol ac Economaidd Cymru (WISERD) ers 2022. Mae ei ymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar: ansawdd y gwaith; hyfforddi, sgiliau a dysgu; cyflogaeth ansafonol; a'r mannau gwaith a'r lleoedd. Mae'r Athro Felstead wedi cwblhau nifer o brosiectau ymchwil wedi'u hariannu (gan gynnwys 18 wedi'u hariannu gan y Cyngor Ymchwil Economaidd a Chymdeithasol), wedi cynhyrchu wyth llyfr, ac wedi ysgrifennu dros 250 o erthyglau cyfnodolion, penodau llyfrau, adroddiadau ymchwil a phapurau trafod. Mae wedi cynhyrchu dros £12.2 miliwn o gyllid ymchwil gan yr ESRC, adrannau llywodraeth y DU, gweinyddiaethau datganoledig, yr Undeb Ewropeaidd a'r Ganolfan Ewropeaidd ar gyfer Datblygu Hyfforddiant Galwedigaethol (CEDEFOP). Mae wedi traddodi nifer o brif anerchiadau i gynadleddau ledled y byd, gan gynnwys Tsieina, Singapore, De Affrica, Awstralia ac Ewrop. Mae wedi rhoi tystiolaeth ysgrifenedig a llafar i ymchwiliadau ar faterion y farchnad lafur a gynhaliwyd, er enghraifft, gan Bwyllgor Dethol yr Adran Gwaith a Phensiynau, Tŷ'r Arglwyddi, Swyddfa'r Cabinet, Senedd yr Alban a Senedd Cymru/Welsh Parliament. Cyhoeddwyd ei lyfr diweddaraf, Remote Working: A Research Overview, yn 2022 gan Routledge. Yn ôl un adolygydd, mae'n 'rhaid darllen i unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb mewn sut mae lleoliad gwaith newidiol yn effeithio ar ein bywydau', tra yn ôl un arall 'mae'r llyfr rhagorol hwn yn rhoi cyfrif hygyrch ond trylwyr sy'n seiliedig ar ymchwil o'r materion allweddol'. Mae wedi bod yn Athro Gwadd yn y Ganolfan Dysgu a Chyfleoedd Bywyd (LLAKES), Sefydliad Addysg UCL, Athro Ymweld ym Mhrifysgol Normal Beijing ac yn Gymrawd Ymchwil Ymweld yng Nghomisiwn y DU dros Gyflogaeth a Sgiliau. Fe'i penodwyd yn Gymrawd Academi'r Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol (FAcSS) yn 2011 ac yn Gymrawd Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru (FLSW) yn 2013. Mae hefyd yn Uwch Aelod o Goleg Adolygu Cyfoed ESRC. Yn 2018-2019 eisteddodd ar Gomisiwn Gwaith Teg Llywodraeth Cymru fel Cynghorydd Arbenigol Annibynnol ac yn ystod 2019-2020 roedd ar secondiad rhan-amser i Lywodraeth Cymru.

Addysgu
Rwy'n cynnull modiwl ail flwyddyn ar fyd gwaith sy'n cyfuno astudiaeth academaidd â dysgu drwy brofiad (SI0240). Yn ogystal, rwy'n rhoi darlithoedd achlysurol ar fodiwlau eraill megis modiwl ôl-raddedig ar ysgolheictod yn y gwyddorau cymdeithasol (SIT100) a modiwl israddedig trydedd flwyddyn ar waith a sgiliau (SI0605). Rwyf hefyd yn dysgu cysyniadau sgiliau, ffyrdd o ddeall datblygu'r gweithlu a dulliau ymchwil mewn cyd-destun fel rhan o radd meistr mewn Sgiliau a Datblygu'r Gweithlu yn Singapore (SIT903).
Yn ystod fy ngyrfa, rwyf wedi goruchwylio a dysgu nifer o fyfyrwyr i gwblhau traethodau hir a thraethodau ymchwil ôl-raddedig. Rwyf hefyd wedi gweithredu fel arholwr allanol PhD ar sawl achlysur, yn y DU a thramor. Rwy'n awyddus i oruchwylio myfyrwyr ôl-raddedig y mae eu meysydd diddordeb yn gysylltiedig â'r farchnad lafur. Mae pynciau o'r fath yn cynnwys lleoliad gwaith, mathau o gontract cyflogaeth a'r amrywiaeth o ffyrdd y mae gweithwyr yn dysgu yn y gwaith.

Mae'r Athro Felstead wedi bod yn astudio materion sy'n ymwneud â chyflogaeth ers blynyddoedd lawer. Ers cwblhau ei PhD, treuliodd 5 mlynedd yn gweithio yng Ngholeg Nuffield, Rhydychen, 14 mlynedd yn Univeristy Caerlŷr a 17 mlynedd (a chyfrif) ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd.
