Astudiodd Robin athroniaeth, clasuron a hanes hynafol yn Eglwys Crist, Rhydychen a Diwinyddiaeth yng Ngholeg Regent's Park, Rhydychen, ac ymgymerodd ag ymchwil ym Mhrifysgol Manceinion, ac mae wedi bod yn darlithio mewn Athroniaeth yng Nghaerdydd ers Ionawr 1968. Mae hefyd wedi dysgu yn Nigeria (1972-3) ac yn Kenya (1975). Cwblhawyd ei PhD yng Nghymru yn 1972, ac mae wedi bod yn Athro Athroniaeth o 1992.
Dyfarnwyd ei DLitt gan Brifysgol Caerdydd yn 2008.
Mae'n aelod o Gyngor y Sefydliad Athroniaeth Brenhinol, a hyd yn ddiweddar bu'n aelod cyfetholedig o Bwyllgor Gwaith Cymdeithas Athronyddol Prydain.
