Ymchwil a gwaith
Methodoleg, hermeneutics a hanes meddwl gwleidyddol
O ddiwedd y 1960au, daeth yr astudiaeth o feddwl gwleidyddol yn y traddodiad Eingl-Americanaidd yn hunan-fyfyriol wrth fynnu mwy o hunan-ymwybyddiaeth fethodolegol. Roedd yr hunan-ymwybyddiaeth hon yn tynnu'n drwm iawn ar waith damcaniaethwyr hermeneutig cyfandirol fel Dilthey, Gadamer a Ricoeur. Ceisiodd llawer o haneswyr, gan gynnwys W. H. Greenleaf, Quentin Skinner a J. G. A. Pocock orfodi ar y ddisgyblaeth ddull ymchwilio a ffefrir a oedd yn eithrio ymyrraeth ystyriaethau athronyddol, ymarferol a moesol presennol i ymchwiliad hanesyddol. Ysgrifennodd Boucher nifer o erthyglau yn beirniadu deddfiadau deddfwriaethol o'r fath gan arwain at y llyfr cyntaf i roi ystyriaeth gynhwysfawr i ffynonellau eu dadleuon, eu ffurf resymegol ac ymarferoldeb eu gweithredu. Yn Texts in Context (Matinus Nihof, 1985) dadleuodd Boucher fod plwraliaeth fethodolegol yn gweithredu fel brêc ar ormodedd idiosyncrasy, ac yn sicrhau parhad hunan-ymwybyddiaeth fethodolegol iach.
Mae llyfr diweddaraf Boucher, Appropriating Hobbes: Legacies in Politics, Law and International Relations (OUP, 2018) yn dechrau gyda chyfiawnhad o'r dull a gymerwyd yn y llyfr, gan ganolbwyntio ar hermeneutics ac yn enwedig y cysyniad o ymbellhau, gan ymgorffori gwahaniaeth Reinhart Koselleck rhwng gofod profiad a gorwel disgwyliad. Mae'n dadlau nad yw testunau Hobbes yn sefyll yn annibynnol ar ddehongliad, a bod pob appropriation yn ailysgrifennu o'r dadleuon a gynhaliwyd gyda gwahanol batrymau tystiolaeth, wedi'u cyfyngu gan y confensiynau a'r normau sefydlog o ysgolheictod sy'n galluogi pobl i wahaniaethu rhwng ffuglen a dadleuon a gefnogir gan dystiolaeth. Mae Boucher a Paul Kelly wedi golygu Political Thinkers: From Socrates to the Present, sydd wedi gwerthu dros 30,000 o gopïau, ac sydd yn ei argraffiadau.
- G. Collingwood a Gwareiddiad Ewrop
Mae Boucher wedi cyfrannu'n sylweddol at athroniaeth R.G. Collingwood. Mae llyfr Boucher, The Social and Political Thought of R. G. Collingwood, yn trafod athroniaeth Collingwood o Wareiddiad Ewropeaidd. Cyfraniad nodedig Collingwood oedd herio'r gwahaniaeth confensiynol a dderbynnir yn gyffredinol rhwng ffyrnigrwydd, barbariaeth a gwareiddiad. Roedd barbariaeth iddo yn ymateb yn erbyn gwareiddiad. Dangosodd Collingwood fod gan y broses wareiddu dair agwedd: dileu grym mewn perthynas â chyd-aelodau o'r corff gwleidyddol, rhwng aelodau o wahanol gyrff gwleidyddol, a rhwng bodau dynol a natur. Y goblygiadau a drafododd Boucher mewn nifer o erthyglau, gan gynnwys The British Journal of Politics and International Relations (2000), 'Collingwood, Tocqueville and the expansion of the moral community'. Pan olygodd Syr Malcolm Knox The Idea of History gan Collingwood ym 1946 gwaharddodd gyhoeddi deunydd llawysgrif ymhellach, gwaharddiad yr oedd gweddw a merch Collingwood yn cadw ato'n llym. Ym 1989 Boucher oedd y person cyntaf i gael caniatâd i gyhoeddi deunydd llawysgrif o bapurau heb eu cyhoeddi ers Syr Malcolm Knox. Mae Essays in Political Philosophy yn cynnwys darnau o'r llawysgrifau. Ers hynny mae Boucher wedi golygu fersiwn ddiwygiedig o The New Leviathan gan Collingwood; The Philosophy of Enchantment (gyda Wendy James a Philip Smallwood); a Hunangofiant (gyda merch Collingwood, Teresa Smith). Mae Fred Inglis, awdur History Man: The Life of R. G. Collingwood yn honni: 'Boucher's own dutiful fidelity makes an essential link in the very survival of the social history of a philosopher's thought.' (t. 323).
Meddwl Gwleidyddol Delfrydol Prydeinig
Mae Boucher o'r dechrau wedi cynnal diddordeb mewn meddwl gwleidyddol Delfrydol Prydain sy'n deillio o'i brif ffynonellau ysbrydoliaeth o gyfandir Ewrop. Mae Boucher wedi cyhoeddi erthyglau ar sawl agwedd ar Ddelfrydiaeth Brydeinig mewn cyfnodolion rhyngwladol fel Storia, History and Theory, Australian Journal of Political Science, Journal of the History of Ideas, History of Political Thought, New Literary History, a golygodd The British Idealists ar gyfer Gwasg Prifysgol Caergrawnt. Ysgrifennodd ddau lyfr arall ar y cyd ag Andrew Vincent, British Idealism and Political Theory (Gwasg Prifysgol Caeredin, 2000), a The British Idealists: A Guide for the Perplexed (Continuum, 2011) lle maent yn dadlau bod Idealiaeth yn athroniaeth fyw gyda chyfraniadau i'w gwneud i faterion cyfoes. Trwy sefydlu Canolfan Collingwood a Delfrydiaeth Brydeinig yng Nghaerdydd gydag Andrew Vincent a Bruce Haddock, mae wedi cyfrannu gydag eraill at adfer Delfrydiaeth Brydeinig i athroniaeth a hanes syniadau prif ffrwd.
Theori Wleidyddol Cysylltiadau Rhyngwladol
Yn y maes astudio hwn, prif gyfraniad Boucher yw dadlau bod y categorïau Realaeth a Delfrydiaeth (sydd ag ystyr gwahanol i Ddelfrydiaeth athronyddol), a Cosmopolitaniaeth a Chymunediaeth, yn annigonol ar gyfer cysyniadoli hanes cyfan damcaniaethau cysylltiadau rhyngwladol. Yn Political Theories of International Relations from Thucydides to the Present (OUP, 1998) mae Boucher yn awgrymu bod categorïau amgen yn cael eu dyfeisio ac nad ydynt yn gallu esbonio elfennau sy'n perthyn i draddodiadau eraill. Mae'n dadlau bod hanes y pwnc hwn i'w weld orau yn nhermau tri chategori cysylltiedig, Realaeth Wleidyddol, Trefn Foesol Gyffredinol, a Moesoldeb Hanesyddol. Mae elfennau'r tri yn ymddangos yng ngweithiau awduron mawr wrth iddynt geisio dod i delerau â'r materion safonol sy'n ymwneud â rhwymedigaethau cyffredinol dynion a menywod, a rhwymedigaethau dinasyddion i'w gilydd. Datblygodd y dadleuon hyn ar ffurf gyhoeddedig mewn perthynas â Hobbes a Burke, ac yn fwy cyffredinol wrth geisio cysyniadoli hanes cyfan meddwl cysylltiadau rhyngwladol o Thucydides i'r presennol gan gyfeirio at feddylwyr fel Vitoria, Pufendorf a Kant. Archwiliwyd un o'r traddodiadau, Universal Moral Order, yn fwy manwl yn The Limits of Ethics in International Relations (OUP, 2009). Ynddo dadleuodd Boucher fod egwyddorion cyffredinol bron yn ddigyfnewidiol yn golygu cymwysterau ar gyfer eu mwynhad a'u hymarfer, ac wedi bod, ymhell o ryddhau, offerynnau gormes. Mae'n darlunio hyn gan gyfeirio at gyfarfyddiadau diwylliannol, gwladychiaeth, caethwasiaeth, a rhywedd. Mae cyfraniad Boucher i hanes meddwl mewn cysylltiadau rhyngwladol yn cael ei gydnabod yn eang ac mae ei waith yn cael ei ddyfynnu'n helaeth yn y maes.
Agweddau ar ddiwylliant poblogaidd
Mae Boucher wedi cymhwyso rhai o'r damcaniaethau gwleidyddol y bu'n gweithio arnynt dros y blynyddoedd i agweddau ar ddiwylliant poblogaidd. Yn Dylan and Cohen: Poets of Rock and Roll (Continuum, 2004 a 2017), cymhwysodd ddamcaniaethau hermeneutig ac esthetig i farddoniaeth delynegol dau o brif eiconau'r 1960au, Bob Dylan a Leonard Cohen, er mwyn archwilio diwylliant gwleidyddol eu dydd. Dadansoddodd Boucher ganeuon Dylan a Cohen yn nhermau tair damcaniaeth esthetig, rhai Collingwood, Oakeshott a Lorca, er mwyn gwahaniaethu'r mathau o ymadroddion y mae'r caneuon yn eu cyfleu i awgrymu bod rhai mathau o ymateb yn amhriodol i rai caneuon, ond gallant fod yn briodol i eraill. Mae'r llyfr hwn wedi'i gyfieithu i chwe iaith, gan gynnwys Sbaeneg, Serbeg a Pwyleg. Fe'i hailgyhoeddwyd yn dilyn marwolaeth Leonard Cohen a dyfarnu'r Wobr Nobel am Lenyddiaeth i Bob Dylan. Ymestynnodd Boucher yr ymchwil hon i archwilio'r berthynas â Bob Dylan, y Beats, a Dylan Thomas. Gydag amryw o arbenigwyr yn y maes gan gynnwys Jeff Towns, Michael Gray, Michael Jones a Danny Williams, mae wedi cyflwyno digwyddiadau amlgyfrwng mewn amrywiaeth o wyliau llenyddol ac wedi teithio'n helaeth o amgylch Cymru yn 2013 i hyrwyddo Canmlwyddiant Dylan Thomas. Mae gwaith diweddaraf Boucher yn y maes hwn wedi ymddangos yn The Journal of Popular Music (2013) a Symbiosis (2016). Mae newydd gwblhau llyfr Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen: Deaths and Entrances gyda'i ferch Lucy Boucher, a gyhoeddwyd gan Bloomsbury, Efrog Newydd.

Y gynhadledd gyntaf oedd 'The Prelude to Decolonisation', a arweiniodd at rifyn arbennig o'r International Journal of Social Economics. Anghyfiawnderau Cymdeithasol ac Economaidd Gwladychiaeth , Cyfnodolyn Rhyngwladol Economeg Gymdeithasol (2019). Roedd yr ail gynhadledd yn thema 'After the Prelude: Decolonization Revolution and Evolution', a arweiniodd at gyfrol wedi'i golygu (gyda Phrifysgol Ayesha Omar Witts), i'w chyhoeddi gan Witts University Press yn 2022. Roedd y drydedd gynhadledd yn canolbwyntio ar Iaith a Rhyddhad ac mae wedi arwain at lyfr wedi'i olygu o'r enw Language, Culture and Liberation. Cyfrannodd Boucher 'Language and Liberation' a 'Language and Decoloniality in Context', i'r gyfrol hon: David Boucher gol. Language, Culture and Decolonisation, Pretoria: Human Sciences Research Council, yn y Wasg, 2021. Mae hefyd wedi cyhoeddi llawer o erthyglau ar Drefedigaethiaeth ac Imperialaeth Ewropeaidd gan gynnwys: 'Invoking a World of Ideas: Theory and Interpretation in the Justification of Colonialism', Theoria: A Journal of Social and Political Theory, 63 (2016), tt. 6-24.
