Summary of Activities:

  • Best known for developing and implementing the use of the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR), Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON) indices to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of orthodontic treatment.
  • Recently studies have focused on three-dimensional facial growth and growth prediction (12-17 year olds) in different population groups and the influence of environment and genetics on face shape.
  • Recent research awards exceed  £2 million supported by over 150 publications.

Teaching Profile

I provide both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority.   The MScD course in Orthodontics is one of the longest running and successful courses in the country.   We able to recruit 2 home/EU candidates and 4 overseas students each year $acirc;   please see requirements for the MSc course in orthodontics.   Five out of the last 8 MSc students (2010) achieved a distinction.

Opportunities are available for PhD students in the areas of:

  1. Epidemiology   $acirc;   prevalence of malocclusions and facial features in populations.
  2. Clinical outcomes and clinical effectiveness in orthodontic provision $acirc;   The use of occlusal indices to assess the quality of orthodontic treatment.
  3. The use of three-dimensional imaging in orthodontics.
  4. The use of biomechanical modelling to mimic facial structures.

Currently I am currently supervising 8 MSc and 5 PhD students with colleagues in a variety of disciplines.
