Yn ystod fy ngyrfa academaidd, canolbwyntiodd y rhan fwyaf o'm hymchwil ar gylchedwaith y systemau nerfol infertebratau a fertebratau, gan ddefnyddio microsgopeg electronau ac imiwnocyochemstry i ddadansoddi rhyngweithio synaptig yng nghraidd nerf fentruol arthropod a'r llinyn asgwrn cefn fertebratau (cylchedwaith synhwyraidd corn dorsal a llwybrau awtonomig ddisgynnol yn rheoli llawr y pelfis ac organau gweledol).
Mae fy ymchwil presennol yn canolbwyntio ar wahanol agweddau ar ffisioleg perfformiad cerddorol ac ergonomeg. Rwy'n rhedeg modiwl ar gyfer myfyrwyr cerdd yng Ngholeg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru lle rwy'n Gymrawd Anrhydeddus. Mae hyn yn cynnwys gweithgaredd anadlol mewn chwaraewyr a chantorion gwynt, agweddau ergonomig ar chwarae pres a gweithgaredd cyhyrau embouchure.
Rwyf hefyd yn ymwneud ag ymgysylltu â'r cyhoedd mewn gwyddoniaeth (gweler y dudalen Ymgysylltu). Cyhoeddwyd fy llyfr ar The Biology of Musical Performance and Performance Related Injury yn 2009 a derbyniodd Wobr Maximising Impact gan yr Ysgol yn 2010. Rwyf hefyd wedi cyd-ysgrifennu llyfr (The Singer's Guide to the Larynx), gyda Nicola Harrison.

Roedd hyn yn delio'n arbennig â'r cysylltiadau sy'n sail i ataliad presynaptig. Roeddwn hefyd yn cymryd rhan mewn astudiaethau heneiddio mewn cylchedau awtonomig y cefn.

Rwy'n cydweithio â Kevin Price (Pennaeth Pres) a Buddug Verona James (Adran Perfformiad Lleisiol.) yng Ngholeg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru a Nicola Harrison (Coleg Penfro, Rhydychen) ar brosiectau ymchwil ar resbiradaeth mewn chwaraewyr a chantorion gwynt, ac ergonomeg offerynnol sy'n delio â gweithgarwch cyhyrau ystum ac embouchure. Rwyf hefyd yn cynnal modiwl ar gyfer myfyrwyr cerdd yng Ngholeg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru ar ffisioleg perfformiad ac atal anafiadau.

Ar ôl cwblhau gradd mewn Sŵoleg ym Mhrifysgol Caeredin, cynhaliais fy PhD ar amin bigenig sy'n cynnwys niwronau o'r ymennydd teleost a chynyrchiad awtonomig yr organau gweledol, yn labordy Gatty Marine ym Mhrifysgol St Andrews. Yna treuliais 9 mlynedd ym Mhrifysgol Caergrawnt gyda Malcolm Burrows, yn ymchwilio i natur a dosbarthiad synapsau ar niwronau a nodwyd yn y system nerfol ganolog locust. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn cynhaliais Gymrodoriaeth Goffa Beit. Cefais fy mhenodi i ddarlithyddiaeth mewn Anatomeg yng Nghaerdydd yn 1989.
