Uwch Ddarlithydd Anrhydeddus
Trosolwg
Mae Dr Protty yn gardiolegydd ymyriadol sydd â diddordebau ymchwil mewn llid (adwaith corfforol i lidwyr niweidiol), thrombosis a haemostasis (ffurfio ceuladau mewn iechyd a chlefydau), gan ei fod yn ymwneud â chleifion sy'n dioddef o gyflyrau'r galon.
Cwblhaodd ei PhD yng Ngrŵp Lipidomeg Caerdydd yn 2021, a ariannwyd gan gymrodoriaeth Ymddiriedolaeth Wellcome GW4CAT. Yn dilyn hyn, dyfarnwyd Grant Cychwynnol iddo ar gyfer Darlithwyr Clinigol o Academi'r Gwyddorau Meddygol i ymchwilio i'r rôl y mae ffosffolipidau procoagulaidd llidiol yn ei chwarae mewn thrombosis arterial (e.e. trawiadau ar y galon). Ochr yn ochr â hyn, mae Dr Protty yn cymryd rhan weithredol mewn ymchwil sy'n cael ei yrru gan ddata sy'n ymchwilio i ganlyniadau ymyrraeth goronaidd unionsyth (PCI), gan ganolbwyntio ar weithdrefnau cymhleth, gan ddefnyddio setiau data cenedlaethol ac aml-ganolfan.
Ym mis Mawrth 2025, mae gwaith clinigol Dr Protty wedi'i leoli yn Ysbyty Athrofaol Cymru fel cardiolegydd ymyriadol ymgynghorol.

Ymchwil
Clefyd cardiofasgwlaidd (y galon) yw prif achos marwolaeth yn y DU. Mae cleifion â chlefyd y galon sy'n profi trawiad ar y galon mewn mwy o berygl o ddioddef trawiad ar y galon, strôc neu farwolaeth arall. Mae trawiadau ar y galon yn digwydd o ganlyniad i rwystrau mewn rhydwelïau ar y galon. Mae'r rhwystrau hyn yn cael eu hachosi gan lid (adwaith i llidus niweidiol) ac yn arwain at actifadu celloedd gwaed fel celloedd gwyn (sy'n gyfrifol am wella clwyfau) a phlatennau (sy'n gyfrifol am geulo gwaed) sydd yn ei dro yn arwain at geulo a rhwystrau annormal mewn rhydwelïau. Mae'r driniaeth ar gyfer y cyflyrau hyn yn cynnwys therapi gwrth-thrombotig (fel aspirin) a gweithdrefnau i agor blociau mewn rhydwelïau coronaidd (fel angioplasti a stentio).
Thema 1: Llid, Lipidau a Thrombosis
Mae ceulo gwaed yn digwydd trwy ryngweithio proteinau gwaed â brasterau penodol (ffosffolipidau) sy'n bresennol ar wyneb celloedd gwaed ac sy'n gysylltiedig â llid. Nid yw eu rôl bosibl wrth yrru digwyddiadau ceulo annormal mewn trawiadau ar y galon yn hysbys. Os caiff ei adnabod, gall fod yn driniaeth newydd bosibl. Mae hyn yn bwysig gan fod un o bob deg claf sy'n profi trawiad ar y galon yn parhau i fod mewn perygl o ddatblygu trawiad arall ar y galon, strôc, neu farw er gwaethaf y driniaeth bresennol.
Mae ymchwil Dr Protty yn y thema hon yn canolbwyntio ar y proffil ffosffolipid a gynhyrchir gan gelloedd gwaed mewn cleifion â chlefyd y galon, gyda'r nod o adnabod gyrwyr ceulo yn y cleifion hyn, a datblygu targedau triniaeth newydd.
Thema 2: Ymchwil sy'n cael ei yrru gan ddata i amlafiachedd cardiofasgwlaidd a chanlyniadau
Mae Dr Protty yn cymryd rhan weithredol mewn ymchwil sy'n cael ei yrru gan ddata sy'n ymchwilio i ganlyniadau ymyrraeth goronaidd (PCI), gan ganolbwyntio ar weithdrefnau cymhleth, gan ddefnyddio setiau data cenedlaethol ac aml-ganolfan.
Mae'r thema hon wedi galluogi Dr Protty i gyfrannu at y maes trwy ddatblygu offer haenu risg (megis UK -BCIS CHIP Score) ac astudio cymhlethdodau prin o angioplasti na fyddai fel arall yn bosibl heb ddefnyddio cronfeydd data mawr o ymyriadau a chanlyniadau coronaidd. Mae'r gwaith hwn yn rhan o gydweithrediad mwy sy'n cynnwys cydweithwyr yng Nghymru, y DU ac yn fyd-eang.

Bywgraffiad
Dechreuodd ymrwymiad Dr Protty i'r byd academaidd pan oedd yn 18 oed. Gohiriodd ei gynnig i astudio meddygaeth am dair blynedd i weithio gyda Dr Mike Tomlinson (Birmingham) mewn labordy gwyddorau cardiofasgwlaidd sy'n arwain y byd dan arweiniad yr Athro Steve Watson (Birmingham). Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn, ymchwiliodd Dr Protty i lwybrau signalau cymhleth platennau a'r rôl y maent yn ei chwarae mewn anhwylderau thrombotig a gwaedu.
Yn dilyn hyn, dechreuodd Dr Protty ei hyfforddiant meddygol ym Mhrifysgol Birmingham lle parhaodd i fynd ar drywydd cyfleoedd ymchwil. Mae hyn yn enghraifft orau o gael Ysgoloriaeth Gwyliau Biofeddygol Ymddiriedolaeth Wellcome i gynnal ymchwil ar aptamers RNA gwrth-HIV ym Mhrifysgol Rhydychen (Yr Athro William James). Graddiodd Dr Protty y cwrs MBChB (meddygaeth glinigol) yn 2013 gydag anrhydedd, tri anrhydedd a 15 gwobr genedlaethol a lleol.
Yn dilyn hynny, symudodd Dr Protty i Gymru ar ôl iddo gael ei benodi i'r rhaglen sylfaen academaidd hynod gystadleuol yng Nghaerdydd. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn, parhaodd â'i daith mewn cardioleg academaidd a dyfarnwyd gradd MSc iddo (Prifysgol Caerdydd) mewn therapiwteg gyda rhagoriaeth, gan astudio'r defnydd o therapi gostwng lipidau mewn cleifion sy'n dioddef o glefyd cardiofasgwlaidd yng Nghymru.
Dechreuodd Dr Protty ei hyfforddiant cardioleg arbenigol ar ôl cael ei benodi i gynllun Trac Academaidd Clinigol Cymru (WCAT) yn 2015. Fel rhan o'r cynllun hwn, datblygodd Dr Protty gysylltiadau â grŵp Lipidomeg Caerdydd (Yr Athro Valerie O'Donnell/Yr Athro Peter Collins) a gwnaeth gais yn llwyddiannus i gynllun GW4CAT Ymddiriedolaeth Wellcome i ddilyn gradd PhD (Dyfarnwyd 2021).
Yn ôl-ddoethurol, parhaodd Dr Protty ar gynllun WCAT fel cofrestrydd cardioleg academaidd clnical, gan ganolbwyntio ar rôl ffosffolipidau proceulo mewn thrombosis rhydwelïol gyda'r nod o nodi targedau therapiwtig gwrth-thrombotig newydd i wella gofal cleifion â chlefyd cardiofasgwlaidd. Ochr yn ochr â hyn, mae Dr Protty yn cymryd rhan weithredol mewn ymchwil sy'n cael ei yrru gan ddata sy'n ymchwilio i ganlyniadau ymyrraeth coronaidd percutaneous (PCI), gyda ffocws ar weithdrefnau cymhleth, gan ddefnyddio setiau data cenedlaethol ac aml-ganolfan.
Ym mis Mawrth 2025, mae gwaith clinigol Dr Protty wedi'i leoli yn Ysbyty Athrofaol Cymru fel cardiolegydd ymyriadol ymgynghorol. Cafodd ei ethol yn gymrawd Coleg Brenhinol Meddygon Caeredin (FRCP) a Chymdeithas Cardioleg Ewrop (FESC) i gydnabod ei gyflawniadau hyd yma.
