Personal Statement

I am a Registered General Nurse (Cambridge and Huntingdon School of Nursing) and hold a first class Honours degree and a PhD in sociology (University of Nottingham).

Academic Interests

My research is concerned with the organisation and delivery of health and social services and its relationship to clinical effectiveness, service quality and professional education and socialisation. I have a long-standing interest in the social organisation of nursing work, including the practical accomplishment of professional identity, members' negotiation of their occupational boundaries and the relationships that nurses establish with clients and carers and how these affect service delivery.   This work laid the foundations for a series of studies on inter-professional working and service integration and a programme of work on the 'work' of non-human actors - such as integrated pathways, guidelines and protocols - in health services delivery and organisation.   I have methodological interest in ethnography, realistic evaluation, non-standard systematic reviews and discourse analysis. I am currently a recipient of a Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellowship undertaking a programme of work on dependency relationships and coordination mechanisms at healthcare interfaces (2011-2014).
