Law, Treaties and International Relations

This project investigates the relationship between treaties and domestic law in medieval Europe c.500 to c.1250. The study aims, in particular, to re-align the historiography on international law in the medieval period with its modern counterpart by setting it in a wider context of international relations and diplomatic practice, and exploring some of the textual and practical possibilities and problems of this context. As part of this project, the intention is also to identify all treaties of the early and high medieval period, translate them into English and provide them with a commentary on their historical context.

Early English Laws

Early English Laws is an AHRC-funded project to publish online and in print new editions and translations of all English legal codes, edicts, and treatises produced up to the time of Magna Carta 1215 and to provide each with introductions and full commentary on all aspects of the texts, language, and law. It aims to transform the way in which these improved texts can be used by scholars and will provide a comprehensive resource on early law. For more information about the project, see Early English Laws.
