Professor Bisson developed his interest in traumatic stress during his time in the British Army and is an active researcher, clinician and teacher in this area. He founded and leads Cardiff University's Traumatic Stress Research Group. He is also a member of Cardiff University's Violence Research Group led by Professor Jonathan Shepherd which won a 2009 Queen's Anniversary Prize.

His research concerning the prevention of psychiatric disorder, in particular post traumatic stress disorder, following traumatic events has contributed to the current guidance regarding single session psychological interventions following traumatic events and the adoption of a stepped care model to detect and treat those affected who go on to develop psychiatric disorder.

His current research can be separated into four interlinking themes.

  1. The development and evaluation of interventions to treat more complex presentations of PTSD - This includes research into MDMA assisted trauma focused psychological therapy for PTSD.
  2. The development and evaluation of more effective and cost-effective interventions following traumatic events – This includes the development and evaluation of a guided self help programme for the treatment of mild to moderate PTSD.
  3. Dissemination of evidence based approaches to the prevention and treatment of mental disorder following traumatic events - This includes the development of curricula and a train the trainers programme to disseminate evidence-based approaches in collaboration with international partners.
  4. Development and exploitation of large cohorts of richly phenotyped and genotyped individuals exposed to traumatic events – This includes work on the National Centre for Mental Health and PTSD Registry cohorts along with collaborations with global partners, to improve the social, psychological and biological understanding of PTSD and other trauma-related disorders.
