Uwch Ddarlithydd
Trosolwyg
Rwy'n Uwch Ddarlithydd ac yn arwain y Grŵp Ymchwil Niwromecaneg yn yr Ysgol Gwyddorau Gofal Iechyd, sy'n cynnwys pedwar myfyriwr PhD a dau ymchwilydd ôl-ddoethurol. Rwyf hefyd yn Arweinydd Dros Dro ar gyfer y Ganolfan Ymchwil ar gyfer Kinesioleg Glinigol, ein labordy dadansoddi symudiadau dynol o'r radd flaenaf.
Mae fy ymchwil yn ymchwilio i reolaeth niwral symudiad dynol, yn enwedig cydbwysedd a cherdded. Mae gen i ddiddordeb mewn sut mae prosesau synhwyraidd a gwybyddol yn rhyngweithio i lunio allbwn echddygol, a sut mae rheoli symudiad yn newid pan fydd pobl yn cael eu herio gan ansefydlogrwydd, poen, blinder, gorbryder neu glefyd niwrolegol.
Rwy'n defnyddio niwrowyddoniaeth ddynol arbrofol a dulliau biomecanyddol, gan gynnwys ysgogiad magnetig trawscraniol, ysgogiad nerfau ymylol, electromyograffeg, EEG a dadansoddi cynnig tri dimensiwn. Mae fy ngwaith presennol yn cynnwys ymchwil i rewi cerdded mewn clefyd Parkinson, ymatebion niwral i heriau cydbwysedd, blinder mewn amodau hirdymor, ac ymatebion dynol i symud mewn adeiladau uchel.

Ymchwil
Grŵp Ymchwil Niwromecaneg
Rwy'n arwain y Grŵp Ymchwil Niwromecaneg yn yr Ysgol Gwyddorau Gofal Iechyd. Mae ein hymchwil yn defnyddio niwrowyddoniaeth ddynol arbrofol a biomecaneg i ddeall rheolaeth niwral symudiad mewn iechyd a chlefydau. Ar hyn o bryd mae'r grŵp yn cynnwys pedwar ymchwilydd PhD a dau ymchwilydd ôl-ddoethurol, Dr Louisa Gwynne a Dr Bethan Thomas.
Rheolaeth niwral symudiad
Mae fy ymchwil yn ymchwilio i sut mae prosesau synhwyraidd a gwybyddol yn rhyngweithio i siapio allbwn modur ar draws llwybrau disgynnol a asgwrn cefn. Ffocws penodol yw cydbwysedd a cherdded, gan gynnwys sut mae'r system nerfol yn paratoi ar gyfer ac yn ymateb i ansefydlogrwydd, aflonyddwch a heriau eraill i symudiad.
Rwy'n defnyddio technegau gan gynnwys ysgogiad magnetig trawscraniol (TMS), ysgogiad nerfau ymylol, electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), dal cynnig tri dimensiwn a dadansoddi cerdded a chydbwysedd offerynnol. Rwyf wedi gweithio gyda diwydiant i ddatblygu system integredig sy'n caniatáu i TMS gael ei gyflwyno yn ystod symudiadau fel cerdded, o fewn ein melin draed gwregys hollt ac amgylchedd rhith-realiti. Gallwch weld y system yn y fideo 3 munud hwn.
Clefyd Parkinson a rhewi cerdded
Un o brif ffocws fy ymchwil bresennol yw rhewi cerdded mewn clefyd Parkinson. Rwy'n arwain prosiect a ariennir gan Parkinson's UK sy'n ymchwilio i'r hyn sy'n digwydd o fewn y system echddygol ar yr adeg dyngedfennol pan fydd person yn rhewi. Trwy archwilio newidiadau mewn rheolaeth corticospinal a intracortical yn ystod cychwyn cerdded a rhewi, rydym yn anelu at nodi mecanweithiau a allai yn y pen draw lywio dulliau newydd o driniaeth ac adsefydlu.
Gallwch ddarllen mwy am y prosiect yma. Trafodais hefyd yr ymchwil ar bodlediad Movers and Shakers yn eu pennod ar rewi.
Poen, blinder a chyflyrau hirdymor
Mae gen i ddiddordeb hefyd yn sut mae poen, blinder, gorbryder a bygythiad yn newid symudiad a rheolaeth synhwyraidd, ac mewn datblygu fframweithiau mecanyddol sy'n integreiddio prosesau synhwyraidd, awtonomaidd a seicolegol.
Fe wnes i arwain y gymuned GW4 sy'n astudio blinder mewn pobl â chyflyrau hirdymor lluosog ac rwy'n un o sylfaenwyr Rhwydwaith Poen Bioseicogymdeithasol GW4.
Ymchwil ryngddisgyblaethol
Mae fy ngwaith yn croesi niwrowyddoniaeth, seicoleg, gofal iechyd a pheirianneg. Rwy'n gyd-ymchwilydd ar brosiect gwerth £1.2 miliwn a ariennir gan UKRI sy'n ymchwilio i sut mae pobl yn canfod ac yn ymateb i symudiad osgled isel mewn adeiladau uchel. Mae'r prosiect yn dwyn ynghyd wyddoniaeth symudiadau dynol, niwrowyddoniaeth, peirianneg strwythurol a phensaernïaeth i ddeall y ffactorau dynol a allai gyfyngu ar ddylunio adeiladau ysgafnach a mwy cynaliadwy. locastproject.org
Ar draws y meysydd hyn, fy nod yw defnyddio ymchwil arbrofol mecanyddol i ddeall sut mae'r system nerfol yn rheoli symudiad o dan amodau heriol yn y byd go iawn, a sut mae'r rheolaeth hon yn cael ei newid gan glefyd a chyflyrau ffisiolegol neu seicolegol eraill.

Rwy'n cyfrannu at addysgu israddedig ac ôl-raddedig yn yr Ysgol Gwyddorau Gofal Iechyd, gyda phwyslais arbennig ar reoli niwral symudiad, dulliau ymchwil arbrofol a gwerthuso beirniadol o dystiolaeth wyddonol.
Rwyf hefyd yn goruchwylio prosiectau ymchwil israddedig a Meistr ar draws pynciau gan gynnwys gwyddoniaeth symud, niwrowyddoniaeth, poen, cydbwysedd a gerdded.
Rwy'n diwtor personol i fyfyrwyr ar draws y graddau Ffisiotherapi Cyn-Gofrestru (MSc), Ffisiotherapi (MSc), Ymarfer Clinigol Uwch (MSc) a Ffisiotherapi (BSc).
Bywgraffiad
Rwyf wedi gweithio mewn labordai ymchwil byd-enwog ledled y byd, gan gynnwys Labordy Niwroffisioleg Symud ym Mhrifysgol Colorado Boulder, yr Uned Ymchwil Realiti a Symudedd Rhithwir yn Ysbyty Adsefydlu Iddewig yn Laval, Quebec, y Labordy Ffisioleg Niwrogyhyrol Gymhwysol ym Mhrifysgol Colorado Denver, a'r Labordy Sensorimotor Corff Cyfan yn y Sefydliad NiwrolegColeg Prifysgol Llundain. Cyn fy narlithiaeth, roeddwn yn gydymaith ymchwil ôl-ddoethurol yn y Ganolfan Ymchwil Biomecaneg a Biobeirianneg Versus Arthritis yma yn Cardiff Unviersity.
