Interests
I have an interest in understanding global solid Earth processes, especially ones related to the mantle (the region between the crust and the core). I undertake this research through a combination of numerical modelling and data processing, especially by bringing strong observations to bear on numerical models. The models frequently utilise High-Performance Computing. They have included proposing slab break-off, assessing source region of subduction zone magmatism, subduction zone dynamics, mantle seismic structure, mantle heat flux, mantle circulation modelling, models of mantle dynamics underpinning mantle geochemistry and planetary formation and evolution. I also have a strong interest in supporting early career researchers interested in related research.

Ers mis Medi 2025 rwyf wedi bod yn Arweinydd Datblygu Ymchwil a Rheolwr Llinell ar gyfer Geowyddorau yn yr Ysgol. Am y 3 blynedd flaenorol roeddwn yn Gyfarwyddwr Recriwtio a Derbyniadau'r Ysgol, a chyn hynny roeddwn i'n Gyfarwyddwr Ymchwil am dros 6 blynedd, ac yn gynharach eto arweiniais y Ganolfan Ddaear Solet ac Adnoddau Naturiol (2015-16). l Iead un o'i grwpiau is-gyfansoddol, y Grŵp Geodynameg Mantell (MGG) sy'n rhan o'r Grŵp Ymchwil Tectoneg a Geoffiseg.
Mae'r Grŵp Geodynamig Mantell yn ceisio deall sut mae'r rhanbarth rhwng y gramen a'r craidd, a elwir yn fantell, yn gyrru dynameg y Ddaear gan gynnwys tectoneg platiau. Rydym yn gwneud hyn yn bennaf gan ddefnyddio modelau rhifiadol uwch ar gyfrifiaduron perfformiad uchel. Rydym yn cyfyngu'r modelau gan ddefnyddio data arsylwadol o lawer o ddisgyblaethau sy'n amrywio o seismoleg a geodesi i geocemeg, daeareg a phetroleg.
Prosiect mawr i'm grŵp yw'r grant "Mantle Circulation Constrained (MC2): A multidisciplinary 4D Earth framework for understanding mantle upwellings" a ddyfarnwyd i mi fel PI arweiniol, ynghyd â 13 o gyd-ymchwilwyr eraill ar draws 9 o Brifysgolion y DU (gweler isod ar yr adran grant). Mae'r prosiect hwn yn cefnogi PDRA (Dr. James Panton) sy'n modelu cylchrediad mantell dros yr 1 GA diwethaf. Mae hyn yn cynnwys modelau sy'n cymhathu hanesion symudiad platiau a gyhoeddwyd gan grŵp Earthbyte yr Athro Müller ym Mhrifysgol Sydney. Mae'r modelau terfynol yn cael eu cyfyngu gan strwythurau tomograffeg seismig a ddelweddwyd gan y seismolegwyr MC2 sy'n gweithio gyda'r Athro Ferreira (UCL) a Dr. Koelemeijer (RHUL / Prifysgol Rhydychen). Mae'r grant yn cefnogi ymhellach 2 fyfyriwr PhD (Nicolas Récalde a Gwynfor Morgan) yn fy ngrŵp a fydd yn ystyried goblygiadau'r modelau cylchrediad mantell ar gyfer anghysondebau seismig a nwyon bonheddig. Mae hefyd yn cefnogi geocemegydd isotop PDRA, Dr. Paul Béguelin, yng Nghaerdydd dan oruchwyliaeth Dr. Morten Andersen. Roedd cyfanswm y prosiect yn cyflogi 14 PDRAs ledled y DU a Chyd-Ymchwilydd arall. Nod y prosiect fydd deall deinameg y fantell. Mae nifer fawr iawn o gyhoeddiadau wedi'u cynhyrchu gan y grant hwn, gyda chyhoeddiad nodedig o'r holl grant yn cael ei gyhoeddi yn Proc. Cymdeithas Frenhinol B (Davies et al., 2025). Dechreuodd y prosiect hwn ym mis Tachwedd 2020.
