Interests
I have an interest in understanding global solid Earth processes, especially ones related to the mantle (the region between the crust and the core). I undertake this research through a combination of numerical modelling and data processing, especially by bringing strong observations to bear on numerical models. The models frequently utilise High-Performance Computing. They have included proposing slab break-off, assessing source region of subduction zone magmatism, subduction zone dynamics, mantle seismic structure, mantle heat flux, mantle circulation modelling, models of mantle dynamics underpinning mantle geochemistry and planetary formation and evolution. I also have a strong interest in supporting early career researchers interested in related research.

Ymchwil
Fi yw Cyfarwyddwr Recriwtio a Derbyniadau'r Ysgol. Cyn hynny roeddwn i'n Gyfarwyddwr Ymchwil, ac yn gynharach o hyd bûm yn arwain Canolfan y Ddaear Solid ac Adnoddau Naturiol (2015-16), a l Iead un o'i grwpiau is-gyfansoddol, y Mantle Geodynamics Group (MGG) sy'n rhan o'r Grŵp Ymchwil Tectoneg a Geoffiseg.
Mae Grŵp Geodynamig Mantle yn ceisio deall sut mae'r rhanbarth rhwng y crwst a'r craidd, o'r enw y fantell, yn gyrru deinameg y Ddaear gan gynnwys tectoneg platiau. Rydym yn gwneud hyn yn bennaf gan ddefnyddio modelau rhifiadol uwch ar gyfrifiaduron perfformiad uchel. Rydym yn cyfyngu ar y modelau gan ddefnyddio data arsylwadol o lawer o ddisgyblaethau sy'n amrywio o seismoleg a geodesy i geocemeg, daeareg a phetroleg.
Prosiect mawr i'm grŵp ar hyn o bryd yw'r grant "Cyfyngedig Cylchrediad Mantle (MC2): Fframwaith amlddisgyblaethol 4D Earth ar gyfer deall chwyddiadau mantell" a ddyfarnwyd yn ddiweddar i mi fel prif PI, ynghyd â 13 cyd-ymchwilydd arall ar draws 9 Prifysgolion y DU (gweler isod ar yr adran grantiau). Mae'r prosiect hwn yn cefnogi PDRA (Dr. James Panton) sy'n modelu cylchrediad mantell dros y 1 Ga, gan ganolbwyntio ar y 300 Ma. Mae hyn yn cynnwys modelau sy'n cymhathu hanesion symudiadau plât a ddarparwyd gan grŵp Earthbyte yr Athro Müller ym Mhrifysgol Sydney. Bydd y modelau terfynol yn cymathu'r strwythurau tomograffeg seismig a fydd yn cael eu delweddu gan seismolegwyr MC2 sy'n gweithio gyda Dr. Ferreira (UCL) a Dr. Koelemeijer (RHUL). Mae'r grant yn cefnogi 2 fyfyriwr PhD ymhellach (Nicolas Récalde a Gwynfor Morgan) yn fy ngrŵp a fydd yn ystyried goblygiadau'r modelau cylchrediad mantell ar gyfer anghytundebau seismig a nwyon bonheddig. Mae hefyd yn cefnogi geocemegydd isotopau PDRA yng Nghaerdydd dan oruchwyliaeth Dr. Morten Andersen. Bydd y prosiect i gyd yn cyflogi 10 PDRA ledled y DU a Chyd-ymchwilydd Ymchwilydd pellach. Nod y prosiect fydd deall chwyddo mantell, gan gynnwys chwyddo goddefol, chwyddo gweithredol o dan "fannau poeth", a'r ffynhonnau gweithredol sydd wedi atalnodi hanes daearegol gyda'u difodiant gan ysgogi Taleithiau Igneaidd Mawr (LIPS). Dechreuodd y prosiect hwn ym mis Tachwedd 2020.
