Ymchwil
Mae fy mhrif ddiddordebau ymchwil ym maes cymdeithaseg ddiwylliannol, ac yn enwedig mewn hunaniaethau cymdeithasol a sut mae grwpiau cymdeithasol yn defnyddio'r gorffennol hanesyddol yn weithredol mewn lleoedd a gofodau cynrychiolaeth ddiwylliannol i wneud ystyr cymdeithasol (e.e. mewn amgueddfeydd a safleoedd treftadaeth). Mae hyn yn cynnwys gwaith ar brosesau creu cof ar y cyd a strategaethau cyfranogol ar gyfer cynrychiolaeth gymunedol.
Mae gen i ddiddordeb arbennig yn y ffordd mae pobl mewn lleoedd yn delio â'r dad-ddirywiad diwylliannol a chymdeithasol sy'n cyd-fynd â dad-ddiwydiannu a diboblogi a sut mae strategaethau adfywio yn cael eu cynhyrchu - yn enwedig rôl aelodau'r gymuned ar lawr gwlad. Yn y meysydd hyn fy mhryder yw cwestiynau am ddosbarth, hilieithrwydd, lle stigma a rhyw. Rwyf hefyd yn arbenigwr mewn methodolegau ansoddol, yn canolbwyntio ar ethnograffeg ac ymchwil amlfoddol.
Ar hyn o bryd, rwy'n gweithio ar brosiect ymchwil sy'n canolbwyntio ar Calabria, yn Ne'r Eidal, rhanbarth sy'n profi colli a heneiddio poblogaeth gyflym. Rwy'n astudio ymatebion i ddirywiad economaidd a phoblogaeth trwy ymchwil ethnogrpahic mewn pedair liocalities. Yn y broses, rwy'n cydweithio â chymdeithasegwyr yn Adran y Gwyddorau Gwleidyddol a Chymdeithasol (DISPES) ym Mhrifysgol Calabria.
Addysgu
Ar hyn o bryd rwy'n arwain ac yn addysgu ar y modiwl Syniadau Allweddol mewn Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol ar gyfer israddedigion blwyddyn 1 ar draws Ysgol y Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol. Rwyf hefyd yn datblygu addysgu newydd ar lefel Meistr ar gyfer y rhaglen Treftadaeth Fyd-eang yn yr Ysgol Ieithoedd Modern.
Rwyf wedi goruchwylio 15 o fyfyrwyr i gwblhau eu PhD yn llwyddiannus ac ar hyn o bryd rwy'n goruchwylio pum prosiect doethurol.
Bywgraffiad
Daeth dechrau fy nhaith academaidd yn ystod dwy flynedd fel Cynorthwyydd Iaith ('lettore') yn yr Istituto Orientale Universitario yn Napoli ar ddiwedd y 1980au. Yno, cefais fy nghyflwyno i Astudiaethau Diwylliannol, a wnaeth fy ysbrydoli i feddwl am iaith a sut rydym yn cyfleu ein profiadau trwy gynrychioliadau diwylliannol. Ar ôl gradd Meistr mewn Astudiaethau Cyfathrebu yng Ngholeg Polytechnig Dinas Sheffield (Prifysgol Sheffield Hallam erbyn hyn), gweithiais ar brosiect ESRC yn edrych ar ymatebion y gymuned i golli swyddi yn y pyllau glo o amgylch Doncaster, lle cefais fy magu hefyd. Sbardunodd hyn ddiddordeb ymchwil parhaus yn effeithiau dirywiad economaidd ar gymunedau a sut mae pobl yn ymateb iddo ar lawr gwlad.
Ym 1993, dechreuais swydd ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd fel Cymrawd Tiwtorial yn Ysgol Astudiaethau Cymdeithasol a Gweinyddol (SOCAS) ar y pryd. Cynigiodd De Cymru'r cyfle i weithio ar gyd-destun cymunedol maes glo nodedig ac i archwilio cysylltiadau cymdeithasol rhanbarth diwydiannol hŷn. Ar y pryd, roedd llawer o ardaloedd dad-ddiwydiannu'r DU yn buddsoddi mewn atyniadau ymwelwyr i geisio adfywio economaidd, a seiliais fy ymchwil doethurol ar gyn-lofa yng Nghymoedd Rhondda a oedd wedi trawsnewid yn Barc Treftadaeth yn ddiweddar. Ysgogodd amrywiaeth o ymatebion lleol yr oedd yn ddiddorol eu harchwilio.
Roedd y tîm cymdeithaseg yr ymunais ag ef yng Nghaerdydd yn chwarae, ac yn dal i chwarae, rôl flaenllaw yn natblygiad dulliau ethnograffig ar gyfer ymchwil gymdeithasol. Dysgais lawer am fethodolegau ansoddol yma, yn enwedig yng nghyd-destun digidol newydd y 2000au cynnar. Ar ôl fy PhD, dechreuais weithio ar brosiect a ariannwyd gan ESRC dan arweiniad yr Athro Paul Atkinson, Defnyddio Technegau Hypergyfryngau Wrth Ddadansoddi a Lledaenu Data Ansoddol. Arweiniodd hyn at brosiectau methodolegol diweddarach - ar hypergyfryngau ar gyfer ethnograffeg, dadansoddi data eilaidd ac ymchwil amlfoddol.
Ym 1999 deuthum yn ddarlithydd mewn Cymdeithaseg yn Ysgol y Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol newydd ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ac yn 2014 enillais Gadair Bersonol. Rhwng 2016-2019 cefais fy secondio i Amgueddfa Cymru fel Pennaeth Ymchwil, profiad dysgu hynod bwysig arall i mi. Ers dychwelyd i'm dyletswyddau yn y Brifysgol, rwyf wedi gwasanaethu fel Dirprwy Bennaeth yr Ysgol (2021-24) ac - yn dychwelyd i'm bloc cychwynnol yn yr Eidal - wedi datblygu prosiect ymchwil ethnograffig newydd ar ddiboblogi yn Calabria, De'r Eidal.
