Rwy'n seryddwr sy'n ysgrifennu am seryddiaeth. Yn fy ngwaith bob dydd, rwy'n gwneud ymchwil i darddiad ac esblygiad galaethau, gan ddefnyddio telesgopau ledled y byd ac yn y gofod. Ar ôl gwneud PhD mewn seryddiaeth radio yn wreiddiol, rwyf wedi treulio llawer o'm gyrfa yn defnyddio telesgopau sy'n arsylwi yn y band tonnau is-filimedr, yr olaf o'r bandiau tonnau electromagnetig i gael eu hagor ar gyfer seryddiaeth (y 'ffin olaf'). Yn fy mywyd arall, ysgrifennu, rwy'n ceisio nid yn unig i ddisgrifio'r darganfyddiadau yr ydym wedi'u gwneud am y bydysawd, oeri'r rhai sydd yno, ond y straeon dynol blêr o sut y gwnaed y darganfyddiadau hyn.

Diddordebau Ymchwil

Galaethau yw cynulliadau o sêr sy'n amrywio o ran maint o'r galaethau corrach bach sydd ynghlwm wrth ein galaeth, sy'n cynnwys dim ond ychydig filoedd o sêr, i'r galaethau enfawr yng nghanol clystyrau cyfoethog, sydd weithiau'n cynnwys dros un triliwn o sêr. Fy mhrif nodau ymchwil yw deall y gwrthrychau diddorol hyn, sy'n cynnwys sêr, nwy a mater tywyll - yn enwedig sut y cawsant eu ffurfio yn y lle cyntaf a sut maen nhw a'r bydysawd wedi newid gyda'i gilydd yn ystod y 14 biliwn o flynyddoedd ers y glec fawr. Mae llawer o'r golau o'r gwrthrychau hyn, yn enwedig yn ystod y biliwn o flynyddoedd cyntaf ar ôl eu genedigaeth, wedi'i guddio gan lwch cosmig, gronynnau solet bach mewn gofod rhyngserol. Yn fy ymchwil, felly, rwy'n gwneud llawer o ddefnydd o delesgopau is-filimetr, megis Arsyllfa Ofod Herschel ac Array'r Atacama Large Millimeter, sy'n ein galluogi i gyfoedi'r llwch i bob pwrpas. Mae gen i ddiddordeb hefyd mewn llawer o feysydd ymchwil eraill mewn seryddiaeth, yn amrywio o rai fel mesur priodweddau sylfaenol y bydysawd (y paramedrau cosmig) lle rydw i'n cymryd rhan weithredol i rai fel exoplanets ac astrobioleg lle nad wyf yn gyfranogwr gweithredol ond yn wyliwr swynol.

Prosiectau Ymchwil Cyfredol

  • Fi oedd cyd-arweinydd yr arolwg Herschel mwyaf o'r bydysawd allgyrsiol, yr ATLAS Herschel. Er ein bod bellach wedi rhyddhau ein delweddau a'n catalogau i'r gymuned seryddiaeth fyd-eang, mae fy nhîm ymchwil yn dal i weithio ar lawer o brosiectau gyda'r set ddata wych hon, gan gynnwys prosiect i ddod o hyd i'r holl galaethau sy'n cynhyrchu'r allyriadau is-mm yn y cannoedd o filoedd o ffynonellau a ganfuwyd yn ein harolwg.
  • Rwy'n defnyddio ALMA i astudio'r ffynonellau â lens disgyrchiant a ddarganfuwyd gyda Herschel, gyda'r nod o ddefnyddio'r chwyddiad a ddarperir gan y lensys i astudio'r nwy a'r sêr yn y digwyddiadau adeiladu galaethau hyn.
  • Comisiynwyd y telesgop is-filimedr cyntaf ym 1987, ond ar ôl 30 mlynedd o seryddiaeth isfilimedr nid oes gennym ddelwedd isfilimetr o'r galaeth troellog fawr agosaf, sef Galaeth Andromeda, oherwydd yr anhawster o gael delwedd o wrthrych sy'n gorchuddio ardal mor fawr o awyr. Mae fy nhîm ymchwil yn arwain prosiect rhyngwladol i gynhyrchu'r delweddau is-filimetr uchel cyntaf o Andromeda, a fydd yn ein galluogi i astudio'r llwch a'r sêr mewn galaeth heblaw am ein rhai ni gyda datrysiad digynsail.
  • Gyda Herschel gallem ganfod galaethau fel mater o drefn allan i shifft o chwech, llai nag un bilon mlynedd ar ôl y glec fawr. Ein nod yw mynd ymhellach fyth yn ôl mewn amser gyda MUSCAT, telesgop milimetr newydd sydd wedi'i adeiladu gan Grŵp Offeryniaeth Seryddiaeth Caerdydd. Unwaith y bydd y pandemig drosodd, bydd y camera hwn yn cael ei gludo i'r Telesgop Milimetr Mawr ym Mecsico lle byddwn yn ei ddefnyddio i ganfod y genhedlaeth gyntaf o galaethau, dim ond ychydig gannoedd o filiynau o flynyddoedd ar ôl y glec fawr, yn ogystal â phrotocleri, y cynulliadau galaethau ar raddfa fawr cyntaf a fydd yn y pen draw, ar ôl deng biliwn o flynyddoedd, Dewch yn glystyrau cyfoethog o alaethau a welwn o'n cwmpas heddiw.
