Ers ymuno â Phrifysgol Caerdydd ddwy flynedd ar hugain yn ôl, rwyf wedi gweithio i ddatblygu cyfleusterau labordy a chyfrifiannol helaeth i gefnogi fy ngwaith i ymchwilio i ddylunio, optimeiddio, perfformiad a monitro iechyd strwythurau ysgafn, yn bennaf y rhai a geir mewn awyrennau. Mae hyn wedi arwain at gyfleuster cynhwysfawr ar gyfer cynhyrchu, profi, monitro a modelu'r strwythurau hyn, cyfleuster nad oedd ar gael o'r blaen yn yr Ysgol Peirianneg. Mae'r cyfleusterau'n cynnwys awtoclaf mawr ar gyfer gweithgynhyrchu cydrannau cyfansawdd, cyfleusterau profi statig a deinamig helaeth, cydberthyniad delwedd ddigidol, allyriadau acwstig, mesur straen a gallu sganio ultrasonic o dan amodau amgylchynol a mwy ymosodol, a gallu modelu statig a deinamig helaeth. Gwireddwyd hyn drwy ddefnyddio grantiau gwerth cyfanswm o £ 6.297 miliwn gan EPSRC, y Gymdeithas Frenhinol, Exxon Mobil a Chynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru (o dan yr ymchwil strategol a'r cyllid seilwaith SRIF III gyda dyfarniad o £1.628M) yn ogystal â chyfraniadau mewn nwyddau gan Altair, MOOG ac AWE. Dyma un o nifer fach o gyfleusterau a gynigir i'w hymgorffori mewn 'Amgylchedd Datblygu a Dilysu Hedfan Cenedlaethol' y manylir arno yn y papur gwyn a ysgrifennwyd gan Bwyllgor Technegol Cenedlaethol Rheoli Iechyd a Prognostics mewn perthynas â llwyfan o'r fath. Mae hyn wedi hwyluso cyhoeddi dros 130 o bapurau mewn cyfnodolion effaith uchel a chynadleddau rhyngwladol.
Wrth ddylunio ac optimeiddio strwythurau ysgafn mae datblygiadau mawr wedi cynnwys datblygu fframwaith ar gyfer optimeiddio aml-lefel strwythurau cymhleth trwy integreiddio'r union feddalwedd stribed VICONOPT gyda'r feddalwedd elfen gyfyngedig NASTRAN gan gyfuno'r hynod effeithlon (dau orchymyn maint yn gyflymach na FEA) ond yn gyfyngedig (o ran y geometregau a'r llwytho y gellir eu trin) dechneg optimeiddio a ddatblygwyd yn fewnol, Gyda llawer arafach ond yn fwy hyblyg o ran gallu modelu, meddalwedd perchnogol i alluogi optimeiddio strwythurau cymhleth yn effeithlon. Mae hyn wedi arwain at ostyngiadau màs mewn strwythur adain nodweddiadol o 7% yn ychwanegol at arbedion cyfrifiadurol. Yn fwy diweddar cwblhawyd gwaith sy'n ymestyn y dechneg hon i ganiatáu i baneli unigol o fewn y strwythur bwcl mewn modd sefydlog. Mae hyn wedi arwain at ostyngiadau pwysau pellach o hyd at 40%. Yn fwy diweddar datblygwyd yr offer hyn i alluogi ymgorffori effeithiau diffygion yn y cam dylunio gan ddarparu dewis arall effeithiol i ddulliau mwy costus cyfrifiadurol, yn enwedig yn y cam dylunio rhagarweiniol pan fydd yn rhaid cynnal nifer fawr o ddadansoddiadau. Gwnaed y gwaith hwn mewn cydweithrediad â Loughborough, Prifysgolion Bryste, Caerfaddon a Strathclyde, Airbus, BAe Systems a NASA Langley ac mae wedi arwain at offeryn sy'n cael ei ddefnyddio'n eang gan Airbus mewn sawl safle ledled Ewrop yng nghynllun rhagarweiniol llawer o'i awyren, i leihau costau dylunio a chyflawni gostyngiadau mewn pwysau awyrennau ac felly defnydd o danwydd ac allyriadau atmosfferig.
Mewn perfformiad mae gwaith wedi canolbwyntio ar ddeall a rhagfynegi ymddygiad strwythurau 'fel y'u hadeiladwyd' i sicrhau dyluniad effeithlon (lleihau ffactorau diogelwch ac felly màs sy'n arwain at arbedion mewn costau economaidd ac amgylcheddol) ac yn meintioli effaith gwahanol lefelau o ddifrod yn enwedig mewn perthynas â strwythurau cyfansawdd. Mae ymchwil i effeithiau amherffeithrwydd geometrig (a dderbynnir yn eang fel y prif ffactor sy'n cyfrannu at yr anghysondeb rhwng llwythi bwcio damcaniaethol a gwirioneddol) wedi arwain at well dealltwriaeth o'r berthynas rhwng yr effeithiau hyn a geometreg a llwytho'r strwythur. Mae gwaith wedi'i wneud i ymchwilio i effeithiau llwytho deinamig ar sefydlogrwydd strwythurau stiffened, ac i alluogi dealltwriaeth o effeithiau geometreg, a hyd llwyth (ac yn arbennig ei berthynas ag amlder naturiol y strwythur), ar y berthynas rhwng llwythi bwcl statig a deinamig i strwythurau dylunio eto yn fwy effeithiol. Ymchwiliwyd hefyd i effeithiau diffygion a gychwynnwyd yn ystod cynhyrchu neu oherwydd difrod gydag ymchwil sy'n canolbwyntio ar effeithiau delaminations yn benodol, gan gynyddu dealltwriaeth o effaith lleoliad a maint y difrod ar berfformiad cyfansoddion ac yn fwy diweddar Laminates Metal Ffibr. Mae gwaith hefyd wedi'i wneud i ymchwilio i effeithiau streic mellt ar strwythurau waliau tenau, ac yn arbennig strwythurau cyfansawdd. Mae'r gwaith hwn wedi'i wneud ar y cyd ag Airbus, Correlated Solutions a Shimadzu ac mae ei bwysigrwydd wedi cael ei gydnabod trwy wahoddiadau i siarad mewn digwyddiadau fel y 'Gweithdy ar Fesur mewn Amgylcheddau Eithafol' (Swyddfa Ewropeaidd Ymchwil a Datblygu Awyrofod).
Wrth fonitro iechyd strwythurol, mae cyfraniadau mawr wedi bod ar waith tuag at ddatblygu system ymreolaethol gwbl integredig sy'n darparu gwybodaeth ddiagnostig a prognostig ar iechyd strwythur. Mae hyn wedi cynnwys datblygu technegau allyriadau acwstig sylweddol well ar gyfer lleoli difrod mewn deunyddiau cyfansawdd anisotropig, heterogenaidd gan ddefnyddio'r dull 'Delta T' [89] ac wrth ddatblygu a dilysu dulliau i nodweddu difrod, gan ddefnyddio ystod o dechnegau prosesu signal gan gynnwys Cymhareb Amplitude Mesuredig, Prif Ddadansoddi Cydran a Rhwydweithiau Niwral. Gwnaed cyfraniadau sylweddol hefyd mewn dylunio synhwyrydd, gan ddilysu'r defnydd o Micro Fiber Cyfansoddion (MFC's) fel synwyryddion AE ysgafn proffil isel y gellir eu hymgorffori o bosibl mewn strwythurau cyfansawdd (gan gynnwys gwaith i bennu ymarferoldeb ac effeithiau ar uniondeb strwythurol defnyddio synwyryddion o'r fath) ac optimeiddio sefyllfa synhwyrydd Defnyddio amrywiaeth o dechnegau arbrofol a modelu. Mae ymchwil hefyd wedi dangos dichonoldeb defnyddio ynni a gynaeafwyd (dirgryniad thermol, gweithredol a goddefol ac amledd radio) i bweru system fonitro iechyd strwythurol sy'n cynnwys synwyryddion o'r fath, a datblygu technegau rheoli pŵer hynod effeithlon sy'n gallu trin ffynonellau ynni mor amrywiol ac amrywiol. Gwnaed y gwaith hwn mewn cydweithrediad â Phrifysgolion Sheffield, Bryste ac Imperial a'r Universite de Valenciennes, Prifysgol Gwyddoniaeth Gymhwysol, Prifysgol Technische Wien a Politecnico di Milano, Airbus, Boeing, MoD, Marshall Aerospace, Plantintegrity a Mistras a'i bwysigrwydd a gydnabyddir gan wahoddiadau i gyflwyno'r cyweirnod agoriadol mewn cynhadledd ryngwladol fawr (SPIE 2013), Ffrainc), a nifer o weithdai allweddol yn y maes gan gynnwys 'Energy Harvesting 2014' (EPSRC Energy Harvesting Network), 'Advances in Wireless Sensor Networks for Hostile Environments' (Rhwydwaith Trosglwyddo Gwybodaeth Electroneg, Synwyryddion a Ffotoneg), 'Gweithdy ar Allu Rheoli Iechyd Integredig Traws-barth-barth' (NATO, Brwsel).
