Mae Juan Pablo yn bensaer sydd â phrofiad ym meysydd tai cymdeithasol a dylunio a chomisiynu mannau cyhoeddus. Enillodd ei gymhwyster pensaernïaeth a'i radd baglor gwyddorau pensaernïol ym Mhrifysgol Dechnolegol Federico Santa María (UTFSM) yn Valparaíso, Chile (2012), a gradd meistr mewn Datblygu Rhanbarthol a'r Amgylchedd o Brifysgol Valparaíso (2015). Yn 2022, cwblhaodd Juan PhD yn y WSA, gyda phrosiect a oedd yn archwilio rôl arferion galw ynni deiliaid tai ar gyfer gostyngiadau allyriadau CO2 mewn cartrefi sy'n ôl-ffitio â systemau ynni adnewyddadwy ar y safle.

Cyn dod i Gaerdydd, bu Juan yn gweithio am flwyddyn fel cynorthwyydd addysgu yn Ysgol Pensaernïaeth UTFSM, a chymerodd ran mewn mannau cyhoeddus a phrosiectau dylunio tai cymdeithasol yn Chile. Gweithiodd hefyd yng Ngwasanaeth Tai a Threfoliaeth Chile, lle cafodd brofiad o asesu ansawdd a chomisiynu datblygiadau ac adnewyddu newydd tai cymdeithasol. Yn y cyd-destun hwn, datblygodd ddiddordeb ym mhwnc ôl-osod adeiladau preswyl.

Mae ei ddiddordebau ymchwil yn ymwneud â lleihau effeithiau amgylcheddol yr amgylchedd adeiledig o safbwynt cymdeithasol-dechnegol. Ar hyn o bryd, mae'n Gydymaith Ymchwil llawn amser ar gyfer prosiect Cartrefi fel Gorsafoedd Pŵer (HAPS) yn Ysgol Pensaernïaeth Cymru.

Ymchwil

Juan’s bachelor’s dissertation was a study of the architecture introduced into the Chilean Patagonia region during its first industrial development; aiming to identify the climatic properties of its –now considered- traditional elements. The results of this project were presented at the research section of the 19th Architectural Biennale of Chile, where it was selected as one of three prized research projects of the event. In parallel, Juan earned a scholarship from the Chilean Commission of Science and Technology (CONICyT) to undertake a Master’s degree in “Regional development and the environment” at Valparaíso University (2013/22130482). His master’s dissertation looked at how environmental ethics were being embraced and understood among architecture schools and young architects in the Valparaíso Region.

Currently, he is a full-time PhD candidate at Cardiff University’s Welsh School of Architecture (WSA), holding a Doctoral grant from CONICyT (2017/72180375). His research project focuses on dwellers’ experience with, and role for the carbon emissions reduction effectiveness of On-site Renewable Energy Systems (ORETs) in existing dwellings. A mixed-methods research design is proposed for the assessment of householders’ engagement with a low-carbon operation of the technologies available in their homes.

His other research interests encompass traditional and low-carbon construction technologies; and the overlap between environmental ethics and the built environment intervention processes.
