I offer a second-year module on ‘Urban Visions, Rural Dreams: city and country in Britain and the United States, 1850-2000’, and a third-year module on ‘The Arts in War and Peace: culture and politics in Britain, c.1930-1960’. I also contribute to the first-year modules History in Practice, and The Making of the Modern World, and supervise independent research projects on modern history topics for the second-year module Exploring Historical Debate, and the third-year Dissertation.

My teaching at MA level has included modules on preparation for doctoral study, the rural idyll in the late 19th and early 20th century, and the historical novel, as well as running a Historical Writers’ Workshop – a practical module exploring approaches to writing about the past for different audiences.

Research supervision:

I welcome enquiries about doctoral research in any of these areas, and particularly: the history of the Labour party and trade unionism in the 20th century; rural politics and policy; agricultural history and the history of food; landscape and identity; the history of the modern countryside; social, cultural and political history of Britain during the Second World War; reading, writing and publishing c.1900-1960; 20th century visual culture and art history.
