Research Interests
I use social scientific ideas to inform analyses of mental health systems. Specifically, in my research and scholarship I address these interrelated areas: policy; service organisation and delivery; work, roles and values; the characteristics and wellbeing of the workforce; practitioner education; and the experiences of users. From the late 1990s I was part of a team investigating stress and burnout in mental health workers whilst my PhD was an ethnographic study of the organisation and delivery of interprofessional and interagency community mental health care. As a Research Capacity Building Collaboration Wales (rcbc Wales) Postdoctoral Fellow I investigated the establishment, work and impact of crisis resolution and home treatment (CRHT) services. I am now leading the NIHR-funded RiSC team synthesising the evidence in the area of 'risk' for young people using inpatient mental health services, and am part of the NIHR-funded COCAPP team (led by Professor Alan Simpson, City University London) investigating care planning and care coordination in community mental health services across England and Wales and the NISCHR-funded Plan4Recovery team (led by Dr Michael Coffey, Swansea University) examining mental health recovery in social care settings. I am joint convenor of a Mental Health Research Network Cymru research development group established to investigate the organisation and delivery of services.
Career Overview
I joined the Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies in 1997, leaving a post as a community mental health nurse in East London. Since then I have maintained a steady output of journal papers, book chapters and conference presentations. I am a founding member of the South Wales Mental Health Nursing Journal Club and Seminar Group, and jointly represent the Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies at Mental Health Nurse Academics UK (MHNAUK).
Teaching Profile
I teach students on courses from pre-registration undergraduate through to professional doctorate levels, and supervise postgraduate research students.
I blog about my work (and other things) at http://benhannigan.com, and tweet as @benhannigan

Meysydd goruchwyliaeth
I welcome hearing from people wanting to carry out postgraduate mental health systems and services research. I am particularly interested in supervising people aiming to develop their expertise in the use of in-depth qualitative research design and methods, and in research which involves collaborations with people with lived experience of mental health difficulties.
