Ymchwil

I am interested in approaching the study of language (in particular referring expressions) from a multi-disciplinary perspective, combining areas such as discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, pragmatics and grammar.

I am writing a book with my colleague Lise Fontaine for Cambridge University Press called Referring in Language, an Integrated Approach. It should be in print in 2018. In this work we combine functional grammar, discourse functions and referring strategies with a particular focus on non-typical uses of referring expressions. This work relates to my PhD, which was on the use of indefinite referring expressions in discourse.

I am also collaborating with Professor Peter Fries (Central Michigan University) on a paper which extends the approaches/principles held in common by Martinet and Halliday on the wordings of nominal groups.

Other research interests include second language learning and teaching, child language acquisition and dementia communication. .

Addysgu

In the academic year 2016-17, I am teaching the following undergraduate modules:

Bywgraffiad

After completing my PhD in the Centre for Language and Communication Research, I remained at Cardiff University as a lecturer and researcher. I have worked on a range of research projects at the Centre for Language and Communication Research, including working with Dr Lise Fontaine and Dr Michelle Aldridge-Waddon on a digital writing project, with Professor Alison Wray on dementia communication and with Professor Karin Wahl-Jorgensen on a transnational project The NSA Files: Surveillance, Leaks and the New Landscape of Legitimacy.

Prior to doing a PhD, I was a tutor of English for Academic Purposes at Cardiff University and the University of Sussex, and an EFL teacher in the UK, Spain and Japan for over 15 years. I did an MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Sussex in 2003.
