Rwy'n Athro Cemeg Gorfforol, ac ymunais â Phrifysgol Caerdydd yn 1996. Rwyf wedi dal sawl rôl uwch reolwr mewnol y Brifysgol, yn enwedig Pennaeth yr Ysgol, a rolau allanol, yn enwedig ysgrifennydd Grŵp ESR y Gymdeithas Gemeg Frenhinol. Rwy'n Gymrawd Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru a'r Gymdeithas Frenhinol Cemeg. Ar hyn o bryd rwy'n Gyd-gyfarwyddwr Sefydliad Catalysis Caerdydd (CCI). Rwy'n angerddol am hyrwyddo pwysigrwydd y gwyddorau cemegol mewn addysgu ac ymchwil y Brifysgol.
Mae fy niddordebau ymchwil wedi'u neilltuo i faes cemeg radical a gwladwriaethau paramagnetig, yn bennaf mewn trawsnewidiadau cemegol, catalysis, deunyddiau uwch, cemeg organometalig a chydlynu. Mae llawer o drawsnewidiadau cemegol mewn gwirionedd yn cael eu catalysu gan cyfadeiladau metel paramagnetic neu'n cynnwys rhywogaethau ocsigen adweithiol, ac i wella dyluniad / swyddogaeth catalydd, mae angen gwybodaeth fanwl am strwythur, priodweddau ac adweithedd y radicalau ansefydlog hyn yn aml. Gan na ellir echdynnu'r wybodaeth hon yn hawdd gan ddulliau NMR confensiynol, mae fy ymchwil wedi arwain y ffordd wrth gymhwyso dulliau EPR datblygedig i astudio'r systemau paramagnetig cragen agored pwysig hyn. Rydym hefyd yn defnyddio EPR maes uchel yn ein hymchwil catalysis, ac yn archwilio'r defnydd o fethodolegau perchnogi (EPR naid pwysau a thymheredd) i astudio'r cemeg radical mewn manylder digynsail. Gan fod tymheredd a phwysau yn baramedrau thermodynamig sylfaenol mewn cineteg adwaith, ecwilibriwia cemegol, cydffurfiadau moleciwlaidd a rhyngweithiadau, mae'n bwysig iawn mewn catalysis fel offeryn trin i archwilio mecanweithiau adwaith gan ddefnyddio galluoedd PJ- a TJ-EPR.
Yn fwy diweddar, rydym wedi ymchwilio i rôl microdonnau wrth gyflymu trawsnewidiadau cemegol cyfryngol radical gan ddefnyddio cyseinydd modd deuol newydd MW-EPR a ddatblygwyd gyda chydweithwyr yn yr Ysgol Peirianneg. Felly, mae'r gallu i ddefnyddio microdonnau i yrru adweithiau cemegol yn thermol wrth eu cyfuno â thechnegau addas i astudio'r canolradd a ffurfiwyd yn fwyaf ddadlennol. Gan fod adweithiau cemegol yn aml yn cynhyrchu canolradd radical byrhoedlog adweithiol sy'n cyfeirio trawsnewid adweithyddion i gynhyrchion, mae ein MW-EPR mewnol yn cynnig ffordd facile i nodi a deall natur y canolradd sy'n bresennol, a'u rolau mewn adweithiau cysylltiedig.

Yn ogystal, rwyf wedi cyfrannu at bob agwedd arall ar ddarparu addysgu, gan gynnwys tiwtorialau, sesiynau ymarferol labordy a goruchwyliaeth prosiectau. Rwyf hefyd wedi goruchwylio nifer o newidiadau mawr i'n rhaglen radd.
Ar ôl dysgu sbectrosgopeg EPR ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd am dros 25 mlynedd, ysgogodd y profiad hwn fi i gyfrannu fel cyd-awdur i werslyfr primer Gwasg Prifysgol Rhydychen (OUP) o'r enw Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (ISBN: 9780198727606).
Bywgraffiad
Ymunodd yr Athro Damien Murphy â Phrifysgol Caerdydd ym 1996 fel Darlithydd mewn Cemeg Ffisegol, ac yn ddiweddarach cafodd ei ddyrchafu'n Uwch-ddarlithydd (2002), Darllenydd (2008) ac Athro llawn (2013). Ar hyn o bryd mae'n Athro Cemeg Ffisegol, Cyd-gyfarwyddwr Sefydliad Catalysis Caerdydd (CCI) ac yn arbenigwr mewn Sbectrosgopeg Cyseiniant Paramagnetig Electron (EPR). Mae wedi dal sawl swydd uwch reolwr ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, gan gynnwys 6 blynedd fel Pennaeth yr Ysgol Cemeg (2017-2023), a 4 blynedd fel Dirprwy Bennaeth yr Ysgol a Chyfarwyddwr Ymchwil (2013-2017).
Dechreuodd ei yrfa drwy astudio Gwyddoniaeth Gymhwysol (Cemeg) yn Sefydliad Technoleg Dulyn (DIT), Iwerddon (1986-1990), ac yn ddiweddarach yn Universitá di Torino, Yr Eidal (1990-1993) a Choleg Trinity Dulyn (TCD), lle cwblhaodd ei PhD (dan oruchwyliaeth yr Athro Elio Giamello) gan ddefnyddio sbectrosgopeg EPR i astudio swyddi gwag diffygion a rhywogaethau radical ar arwynebau ocsid. Yna symudodd i'r Instituto Superior Technico (IST), Lisbon (1994-1995) i astudio strwythur clystyrau dŵr bach mewn pilenni anghymesur gan ddefnyddio ATR-FTIR (gyda'r Athro Maria de Pinho), ac yn ddiweddarach i'r Université P. et M. Curie, Paris (1995-1996) yn archwilio strwythur deunyddiau micromandyllog a zeolitau gan ddefnyddio FTIR ac EPR (gyda'r Athro Michel Che a Pascale Massiani).
Hyd yn hyn mae ei ymchwil mewn sbectrosgopeg EPR wedi derbyn cefnogaeth ariannol trwy nifer o grantiau mawr yr UE ac UKRI. Mae'n cydweithio'n eang â nifer o bartneriaid academaidd yn genedlaethol ac yn rhyngwladol, ac mae hefyd yn gweithio gyda phartneriaid diwydiannol amrywiol. Fel arbenigwr ym maes astudio radicalau rhydd, dyfarnwyd iddo Wobr Teilyngdod Ymchwil Wolfson y Gymdeithas Frenhinol (2014-2019). Mae'n Gymrawd yr RSC (ers 2009), yn Gymrawd yr LSW (ers 2018), ac ar hyn o bryd mae'n Athro Visting yn Universita di Torino, yr Eidal.
