Ymchwil
Deuthum i Gaerdydd yn 1980 ar gyfer MSc anrhydeddus UWIST mewn Hydrobioleg Gymhwysol, o yno cwblhau PhD ar ansawdd dŵr ac infertebratau yn system afon Gwy. Ar yr un pryd, datblygais ddiddordeb yn ecoleg adar afon, gan ddangos am y tro cyntaf sut y cafodd y grŵp hwn ei effeithio gan law asid. Mae'r themâu mawr hyn - pwysau lluosog ar raddfa fyd-eang ar ecosystemau dŵr croyw, infertebratau afonydd ac adar mewn cynefinoedd dyfrol - wedi parhau i ddarparu fy modelau ymchwil mawr.
O 1984, arweiniais grŵp ôl-ddoethurol yn ymchwilio i effeithiau ecolegol asideiddio mewn afonydd yr ucheldir gan ddefnyddio arolygon, modelau ac arbrofion ar raddfa ecosystem yn Arsyllfa Ffrwd Llyn Brianne. Mae'r arbrofion hyn bellach wedi rhedeg ers bron i 40 mlynedd, ac mae fy ngwaith ar raddfa ecosystem wedi ehangu i gwmpasu effeithiau newid byd-eang ar ecosystemau dyfroedd croyw ar dri chyfandir. Mae'r gwaith diweddaraf gydag ystod eang o gydweithwyr yn parhau i ehangu ein tystiolaeth am sensitifrwydd dŵr rhedeg i newid yn yr hinsawdd, tra hefyd yn adrodd y stori ryfeddol am sut mae adferiad afonydd Prydain o broblemau misglwyf difrifol wedi cael ei dymheru gan yr her gynyddol o lygredd gwasgaredig o ffynonellau trefol a gwledig.
Hyd yn hyn, mae cyfanswm fy ngyrfa o dros 300 o gyhoeddiadau gwyddonol wedi cael eu dyfynnu dros 25,000 o weithiau yn H > 78 (Google Scholar).
Meysydd ymchwil
Effeithiau newid byd-eang ar organebau ac ecosystemau dŵr croyw
Am bron i bedwar degawd, themâu amlwg yn fy ngwaith fu effeithiau tymor hir ar raddfa fawr newid byd-eang ar ecosystemau dŵr croyw yn ogystal ag adfer ecosystemau lle mae straen lluosog wedi'u rheoli neu eu tynnu (gweler 'Cyhoeddiadau')
Mae gan Arsyllfa Ffrwd Llyn Brianne, sy'n unigryw yn fyd-eang, sy'n weithredol o 1981, nifer o ffrydiau arbrofol a chyfeirnod sydd wedi cyfrifo'n amlwg wrth ddeall effeithiau newid byd-eang ar ecosystemau dŵr croyw. Mae'r safle hefyd yn gyfres o sianeli arbrofol replicate, rhaeadru sy'n ffigwr fwyfwy mewn gwaith ymchwil.
Bioamrywiaeth Dŵr Croyw
Mae bioamrywiaeth afonydd a gwasanaethau ecosystemau wedi dod yn ffocws cynyddol bwysig yn fy ngwaith, yn enwedig i ddeall sut mae bioamrywiaeth yn cefnogi gwasanaethau a sut mae straen amgylcheddol yn erydu swyddogaethau ecosystemau a darparu gwasanaethau.
Mae enghreifftiau'n cynnwys:
- Cyd-arweinyddiaeth adrannau dŵr croyw yr Asesiad Ecosystem Cenedlaethol http://uknea.unep-wcmc.org/ ar gyfer Defra a'r Gweinyddiaethau Datganoledig (Maltby & Ormerod 2011 http://uknea.unep-wcmc.org/Resources/tabid/82/Default.aspx )
- Gweithredu fel PI Caerdydd yn y prosiect BESS NERC gwerth £3.1 miliwn, Duress http://nerc-duress.org/ (Amrywiaeth mewn Afonydd yr Ucheldir ar gyfer Cynaliadwyedd Gwasanaeth Ecosystem; o 2012)
- Gweithredu fel PI Caerdydd a chyd-arweinydd astudiaethau dalgylch yn y prosiect MARS € 9 miliwn a ariennir gan yr UE (Rheoli ecosystemau dyfrol ac adnoddau dŵr o dan straen lluosog; o 2014)
- Casglodd NEA y DU ddata allweddol ar statws a thueddiadau gwasanaethau ecosystem a ddarperir gan ddyfroedd ffres Prydain.
Mae fy ngwaith bioamrywiaeth hefyd yn cynnwys ffocws sylweddol ar lygredd
Arweiniodd diddordeb hirsefydlog mewn effeithiau llygredd ar ddyfroedd croyw - gan gynnwys glaw asid, dŵr gwastraff a sylweddau xenobiotig - yn 2016 at rai o asesiadau cyntaf y byd o ficroblastigau mewn gweoedd bwyd afon. Datgelodd ymchwiliad i Afon Gwy, Brynbuga a Taf fod tua 50% o bryfed yn cynnwys ffibrau plastig (Windsor et al. 2019). Ers hynny, mae gwaith pellach wedi dangos sut mae'r deunydd hwn yn cael ei drosglwyddo i ysglyfaethwyr afonol (D'Souza et al. 2020_, hefyd yn asesu ei ffynonellau, fflwcs, ffawd ac effeithiau yn amgylchedd yr afon. Mae'r gwaith presennol hefyd yn cynnwys asesiadau o gyfansoddion fferyllol dynol a milfeddygol mewn afonydd.
Ecoleg adar afonydd a gwlyptir
Dechreuais ymddiddori mewn adar afon, ac yn enwedig dippers, wrth ymchwilio infertebratau dyfrol ar gyfer fy PhD. Arweiniodd y diddordeb hwn at rai o dystiolaeth gyntaf y byd y gallai glaw asid effeithio ar adar (ee Ormerod et al. 1991), ac yn ei dro rai o ymchwil adar autecolegol mwyaf adnabyddus y byd. Arweiniodd y cysyniad o ddefnyddio trochwyr fel dangosyddion asidedd at ymchwil i'w rôl fel dangosyddion agweddau ehangach o ansawdd dŵr sydd ar hyn o bryd yn cynnwys halogyddion etifeddiaeth neu sy'n dod i'r amlwg, llygredd gwasgaredig a microblastigau. Cydweithredais yn ddiweddar â Sefydliad Bywyd Gwyllt India mewn ymchwiliadau i effeithiau newid byd-eang ar afonydd Himalaia – lle mae'r casgliad mwyaf amrywiol o adar afonydd ar y Ddaear yn un o'i ranbarthau sy'n newid yn gyflymaf.
