Trosolwyg

Rwy'n genetegydd poblogaeth a biolegydd esblygiadol sy'n gweithio yn y rhyng-gyfnod o genomeg, biowybodeg, geneteg esblygiadol a bioleg gadwraeth.

Mae fy ngrŵp, ynghyd â rhai Dr Frank Hailer, Dr Isa-Rita Russoa Dr David Stanton, yn ffurfio clwstwr ymchwil Ecoleg a Chadwraeth Moleciwlaidd Caerdydd (CMEC).

Mae fy ngrŵp ymchwil yn defnyddio ystod o ddulliau bioleg foleciwlaidd sy'n canolbwyntio ar dechnegau 'omics (e.e. ddRAD-seq, trawsgrifiad, dilyniannu genom cyfan, metabarcodio ac ati) i nodweddu hanes esblygiadol rhywogaethau a'u poblogaethau yng nghyd-destun cwestiynau esblygiadol ac ecolegol sy'n berthnasol mewn bywyd gwyllt, amaethyddiaeth ac adfer cynefinoedd.

Mae ein hymchwil yn cwmpasu gwaith cadwraeth a wnaed mewn partneriaeth â Chanolfan Maes Danau Girang (Sabah, Bornean Malaysia), Ymddiriedolaeth Cadwraeth Durrell ( Affrica a'r Caribî) ac ystod o gydweithwyr mewn sefydliadau academaidd, cyrff anllywodraethol a sefydliadau preifat sydd â diddordeb mewn bywyd gwyllt, da byw a bioamrywiaeth pridd yn America Ladin, Affrica ac Asia. Yn Ewrop a'r DU, rydym yn canolbwyntio ar genomeg da byw, yn cyfrannu at ddiogelwch bwyd a datblygu addasu hinsawdd prif rywogaethau da byw.

Y tu allan i'm rôl fel ymchwilydd a darlithydd ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, rwyf hefyd yn gweithredu fel cydlynyddGrŵp Arbenigol Geneteg Consevation IUCN ar gyfer De America ac yn Is-lywydd y Gymdeithas Ecoleg Drofannol. Rwy'n olygydd cyswllt y cyfnodolion Evolutionary ApplicationsEcology and EvolutionConservation Genetics Resources ac Animals.

Os ydych chi'n cael eich profi i ymuno â'm grŵp ymchwil i wneud ôl-ddoethuriaeth, PhD neu Meistr,  anfonwch e-bost ataf os gwelwch yn dda.

Ymchwil

My research revolves around questions regarding the process that maintain or drive changes in genetic variation in populations, e.g. demographic processes like bottlenecks and population structure, or natural selection related to adaptive processes to new environments. Within this context, I broadly divide my research in two areas. In one of them (conservation) I focus on understanding historical processes that lead to the observed patterns of genetic diversity, which when contextualised with current environmental trends can be used to contribute information for the generation of management strategies for species conservation. The other area is livestock genomics, where I do research to understand how the domestication process took place and the processes that have led to the current distribution of genetic variation in species such as cattle, sheep, camelids and tilapia, and use that information to contribute to the development of management plans to increase resilience and sustainability of livestock production systems.

My research uses a combination of traditional molecular markers like microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA, but also new methods from the genomics era, like SNP array data and whole genome sequencing, to generate the genetic data for analyses using population geneticslandscape genetics and phylogenetics. I analyse these data with a combination of available tools, or custom made bioinformatic tools that I’ve developed according to the specific needs of a project.
