Mae amgylcheddau dŵr croyw yn wynebu myrdd o bwysau anthropogenig sy'n achosi colli bioamrywiaeth ar raddfa frawychus, gan erydu'r ecosystemau yr ydym yn dibynnu arnynt. Dyma oedd prif sbardun fy ymchwil.
Gyda chefndir mewn ecoleg foleciwlaidd, mae fy ffocws wedi dod yn fwyfwy sy'n canolbwyntio ar ddata gyda defnyddio amrywiaeth eang o ddulliau dadansoddol i ddeall sut mae systemau biolegol yn ymateb i bwysau anthropogenig, o ran eu hecoleg a'u hesblygiad.
Mae'r defnydd o DNA amgylcheddol a dilyniannu trwybwn uchel ar gyfer monitro bioamrywiaeth o ddiddordeb arbennig, oherwydd gallu pwerus y dechneg hon i gynhyrchu symiau digynsail o ddata ar gymunedau biolegol.
Er fy mod wedi gweithio gyda llawer o systemau biolegol, gan gynnwys firysau, bacteria, infertebratau a phlanhigion, mae llawer o'm hymchwil wedi canolbwyntio ar bysgod. Mae fy angerdd am ymchwil pysgod wedi arwain at fy mhenodi'n Uwch Olygydd i'r Journal of Fish Biology, yn ogystal â Chydlynydd Cyhoeddusrwydd i Gymdeithas Pysgodfeydd Ynysoedd Prydain (FSBI).

Ar hyn o bryd rwyf wedi fy lleoli yn y Sefydliad Ymchwil Dŵr yn Ysgol y Biowyddorau yn gweithio fel ymchwilydd ôl-ddoethurol ar brosiect Ecosystemau Dŵr Croyw ar Raddfa Fawr (LTLS-AB). Rwy'n modelu bioamrywiaeth dŵr croyw yn y DU dros gyfnodau hir o amser i ddeall yn well beth sy'n effeithio ar fioamrywiaeth, yn ogystal â rhagweld bioamrywiaeth o dan senarios yn y dyfodol.
Dechreuodd fy nghyfnod yn Sefydliad Ymchwil Dŵr Prifysgol Caerdydd yn 2021 pan ddechreuais weithio ar brosiect Dadansoddi a Gwyliadwriaeth Dŵr Gwastraff Amgylcheddol Cymru (WEWASH) fel dadansoddwr data. Yn y sefyllfa hon, defnyddiais ddata a gafwyd o ddulliau moleciwlaidd i ddeall lledaeniad pathogenau mewn poblogaethau ledled Cymru yn well. Yna cafodd mewnwelediadau eu cyfleu i Lywodraeth Cymru mewn adroddiadau wythnosol, gan helpu i lywio polisi ar iechyd y cyhoedd.
Cyn fy nghyfnod ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, roeddwn yn ymchwilydd ôl-ddoethurol ym Mhrifysgol Bangor, lle canolbwyntiodd fy ngwaith ar ddeall perthnasedd ecolegol eDNA mewn afonydd a nentydd, dadansoddi data o ddilyniannu trwybwn uchel a gosod y canlyniadau mewn cyd-destun ecolegol. Cwblheais fy PhD ym Mhrifysgol Bangor hefyd, a oedd yn canolbwyntio ar asesu effaith croesiad rhwng dihangfeydd dof o ddyframaeth a phoblogaethau gwyllt. Gan gydweithio â'r Sefydliad Ymchwil Morol, Norwy, roedd yn cynnwys defnyddio dulliau moleciwlaidd lluosog.
Dechreuodd fy nhaith ymchwil ym Mhrifysgol Bryste, lle cwblheais fy MSci. Roeddwn yn ymwneud â dau brosiect, archwiliodd y cyntaf geneteg poblogaeth ymbelydredd o cichlidau, ac archwiliodd yr ail geneteg poblogaeth rhywogaeth o siarcod môr dwfn.
