Derbyniodd yr Athro Ugalde radd B.Sc mewn Peirianneg Electroneg a Chyfathrebu o Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM, Sefydliad Technoleg ac Addysg Uwch Monterrey), Dinas Mecsico, Mecsico (2002), gradd M.Sc mewn Peirianneg Drydanol o Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN, Sefydliad Polytechnig Cenedlaethol), Dinas Mecsico, Mecsico (2005), a'r Ph.D. gradd mewn Electroneg a Pheirianneg Drydanol o Brifysgol Glasgow, Yr Alban, DU (2009).
Mae ei ddiddordebau ymchwil a'i arbenigedd academaidd yn cynnwys sefydlogrwydd a rheoli systemau pŵer, integreiddio grid a rheoli ynni adnewyddadwy, trosglwyddo HVDC, technolegau DC, modelu a rheoli systemau ynni integredig, modelu systemau deinamig, a rheoli aml-newidynnau. Mae wedi goruchwylio 24 o fyfyrwyr PhD i'w gwblhau ac mae'n weithgar iawn yn lledaenu ymchwil trwy bapurau cynadleddau a chyfnodolion. Mae wedi cyhoeddi dros 180 o erthyglau a adolygwyd gan gymheiriaid - sawl un mewn cyfnodolion gradd Transactions haen uchaf a phroffil uchel. Mae'n Aelod o Fwrdd Golygyddol y cyfnodolyn Applied Energy. Mae'n Olygydd Cyswllt IET Energy Systems Integration, IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, ac mae wedi bod yn Olygydd Gwadd ar gyfer nifer o gyfnodolion.
Mae'r Athro Ugalde wedi gweithredu fel Prif Ymchwilydd neu Gyd-Ymchwilydd mewn prosiectau proffil uchel CEU, EPSRC a ariennir gan y diwydiant. Ef oedd Prif Ymchwilydd Caerdydd ar gyfer prosiect FP7 CEU BEST PATHS—consortiwm mawr gyda 40 o bartneriaid o 11 o wledydd Ewropeaidd. Roedd yn Brif Ymchwilydd Caerdydd mewn dau brosiect Partneriaeth Trosglwyddo Gwybodaeth Innovate UK (KTP) (gyda SRS Works Ltd) ar y defnydd o storio ynni thermol ar gyfer systemau oeri ledled y ddinas a chymwysiadau domestig. Arweiniodd y consortiwm rhyngddisgyblaethol proffil uchel 'Flex-Cool-Store' (prosiect EPSRC >£1m), gyda chefnogaeth BEIS, awdurdodau lleol, datblygwyr tai a phartneriaid diwydiannol, gan fynd i'r afael â darpariaeth hyblygrwydd storfeydd oeri a thermol.
Ar hyn o bryd mae'r Athro Ugalde yn gweithredu fel aelod o 'Banel Hyrwyddo Ysgolion' yr Ysgol Peirianneg. Cyn hynny, gwasanaethodd fel: Cydlynydd REF ar gyfer yr Adran Peirianneg Drydanol ac Electronig, Cydlynydd Erasmus ENGIN, Tiwtor Blwyddyn yr MSc mewn Systemau Ynni Trydanol, Swyddog Symudedd Rhyngwladol EEE / IEN, a Thiwtor Gwyddoniaeth Heb Ffiniau (SWB). Mae'n Diwtor Personol i fyfyrwyr Israddedig ac MSc ac yn Fentor i gydweithwyr. Roedd yn Arholwr Allanol ar gyfer 6 cynllun gradd MSc yn yr Adran Peirianneg Electronig a Thrydanol o Brifysgol Strathclyde. Ar hyn o bryd fe'i penodir yn Arholwr Allanol ar gyfer Prifysgol Caerwysg (MSc mewn Peirianneg Ynni Adnewyddadwy, Coleg Peirianneg, Mathemateg a Gwyddorau Pysical) a Phrifysgol Malta (BEng mewn Peirianneg Drydanol ac Electronig, Adran Peirianneg Drydanol). Mae'n gweithredu fel Arweinydd Technegol CIGRE UK ar gyfer Prifysgol Caerdydd. Mae hefyd yn Uwch Gynrychiolydd Academaidd Pwyllgor Llywio CIGRE UK.
Ers mis Tachwedd 2024, mae'r Athro Ugalde yn gwasanaethu fel Aelod o Bwyllgor PHEE (Athrawon a Phenaethiaid Peirianneg Drydanol)—cymuned sy'n seiliedig ar ddisgyblaeth o Gyngor Athrawon Peirianneg (EPC), a'i nod yw gweithredu fel fforwm ar gyfer cyfnewid a lledaenu gwybodaeth ac i hyrwyddo materion o ddiddordeb ac o bryder arweinwyr academaidd mewn adrannau Peirianneg Drydanol mewn prifysgolion yn y DU.

Addysgu
Ers ymuno â Chaerdydd, mae Carlos Ugalde wedi addysgu ar bob lefel o fyfyrwyr israddedig Blwyddyn 1 i fyfyrwyr MSc, o fodiwlau lefel ysgol mewn theatrau addysgu mawr, i lawr i oruchwyliaeth 1 i 1.
