Research

My research used the evidence base to reduce health inequalities and improve clinical effectiveness by:
* Systematic reviews to identify best practice;
* Epidemiology e.g. dicennial Child Dental Health Survey 2014 to collect national disease prevalence date which will set the agenda for NHS treatment and research priorities, as the only paediatric dentist I prepared the examination criteria and trained the dentists;
* Clinical trials to test treatments in primary care e.g.
As Co-Chief Investigator / Co-Lead Applicant  £1.3M NIHR HTA sponsored Seal or Varnish investigating the relative clinical and cost effectiveness of pit and fissure sealants and fluoride varnish.  The largest and most highly funded clinical dental research project in Wales is a key element of the NIHR's UK national dental portfolio.  The work involved close collaboration with the South East Wales Trials Unit.
As Welsh Lead for £2.9M NIHR HTA sponsored FiCTION study investigating clinical and cost effectiveness of filling decay in children's primary (baby) teeth. The study involves six UK Dental Schools, Newcastle clinical trails unit and over 70 general dental practices across the UK. I train the Welsh dentists to recruit children to the trial which will report in 2018 and will guide NHS practice with regards to the management of decay in primary teeth.

Research Projects:

Seal or Varnish? A randomised trial to determine the relative cost and cost effectiveness of fissure sealants and fluoride varnish in preventing dental decay. NIHR – HTA (Project: 08/104/04)
.
FiCTION – Filling Children's Teeth: Indicated or Not? NIHR HTA (Project: 07/44/03).
