Research

Gordon's research falls within the theory of Systemic Functional Grammar. Together with Professor Robin Fawcett, he has worked on the development of a large computational systemic grammar of English, his particular focus being primarily on lexical aspects of the grammar. His book The Lexicogrammar of Adjectives (Cassell 1998) is the only book-length contribution to lexis within systemic functional theory. In recent years, his research has focused on the systemic functional modelling of phraseological expressions and probabilistic grammar, substantially underpinned by corpus linguistic investigation.
