Overview
Professor Lewis White PhD, FRCPath, FECMM is a Consultant Clinical Scientist at Public Health Wales, where he leads the Public Health Wales Mycology Regional Reference Unit at the University Hospital of Wales. He is also a Professor at Cardiff University, School of Medicine (Medical Microbiology).
His work bridges specialist reference laboratory practice, clinical microbiology, diagnostic development, and trials research in medical mycology. A central theme of his career has been improving the diagnosis and management of invasive fungal disease through diagnostic-driven and risk-stratified approaches, supporting earlier diagnosis while reducing unnecessary antifungal treatment.
Professor White has extensive expertise in molecular and non-culture fungal diagnostics, fungal PCR, host biomarker development, antifungal resistance surveillance, and clinical trials of novel antifungal therapies. His research interests include invasive aspergillosis, candidiasis, Pneumocystis pneumonia, antifungal stewardship, fungal epidemiology, and the use of host and pathogen markers to better understand risk, disease, and treatment response.
He has contributed widely to national and international medical mycology networks, diagnostic standardization efforts, guideline development and is currently focussed on policies related to the dual use of antifungals in the clinic and agriculture. His work is highly collaborative, bringing together reference laboratory expertise, clinical teams, academic researchers, and trials infrastructure to improve the recognition, diagnosis, surveillance (both clinical and environmental), and management of fungal disease.
Professor White is a Fellow of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology and the Royal College of Pathologists. He has published extensively in medical mycology and continues to support research aimed at improving patient care, strengthening fungal disease surveillance, and advancing practical diagnostic innovation.
