ABDULLAH ALQARNI
Research Student, School of Modern Languages
I started my PhD studies at the School of Modern Languages in 2018, undertaking translation research that discusses the sociological turn in translation studies. My PhD research focuses on the sociology of translation in general and on the application of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory on the translation of self-help literature in particular.
I obtained my BA (Hons) degree in English Language from King Khalid University (Saudi Arabia) in 2012, where I was subsequently appointed as a teaching assistant in Translation Studies in the department of English Language. In 2016, I was awarded a full scholarship by the University of Bisha (Saudi Arabia) to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK. In 2018, I received an MA in Translation Studies (distinction) from the University of Leicester and was appointed to be a lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Bisha.
Research
My PhD research project is primarily inspired by statements from (co)producers of Arabic translations of English self-help (S-H) literature and claims made by translation researchers of S-H literature. These concern the influence of socio-cultural and historico-political motivations and factors on the emergence and genesis of English S-H literature in Arabic translation. My thesis aims to answer the following research questions:
- To what extent were the emergence and development of Arabic translations of English S-H literature influenced by religiously-motivated, intellectually-motivated, economically-motivated or politically-motivated factors?
- Are there other socio-cultural and historico-political factors that have impacted the translation activity of English S-H literature into Arabic?
- What is the reflection of these factors on the translation agents and products of English S-H literature in Arabic translation?
Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory and its heuristic concepts’, namely field, habitus and capital, my thesis explores’ the translation activity in this postulated field, potentially termed ‘English S-H Literature in Arabic Translation’, as a socially situated activity, along with its social agents.
My PhD is being supervised by Professor Loredana Polezzi and Dr Abdel-Wahab Khalifa.
