Overview

Yihan Jin is a Wales-based Chinese pianist. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Music Performance at Cardiff University under the supervision of Professor Kenneth Hamilton and Professor Caroline Rae. Before starting her PhD, she earned a Master of Performance with distinction from the Royal College of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Cardiff University.

As a concert pianist, Yihan has performed at numerous venues in the UK, including the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, Shrewsbury St. Chad’s Church, and Haslemere Methodist Church, and internationally at the City Hall of Paris, Regional Conservatory of Versailles, Médiathèque de l'Europe,  Belleville Church, and Guangdong Opera House VFun Concert Hall. She has also given solo and chamber concerts at Cardiff University Concert Hall and premiered works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies at the university's International Study Day. She also enjoys playing a wide range of repertoire spanning several musical periods. Her repertoire includes Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy, as well as contemporary figures like Lutyens, Ligeti, Stockhausen, Crumb, and Fedele.

Vanessa Latarche remarked that Yihan displayed "a considerable amount of technical accomplishment and impressive pianistic skills," and remarked that she "provided an imaginative connection in the pieces presented." Deniz Gelenbe believes that her performance showed "high intellect to commend," and praised her ability to "perform such a difficult programme with ease."

As a collaborative pianist, Yihan has extensive experience working with chamber groups, solo instrumentalists, singers, orchestras, choirs, composers, and visual artists.

Research

My research focuses on the performance history and approaches to Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas. It explores the diverse methods adopted by selected pianists in navigating this virtuosic repertoire and aims to shift more focus onto performers in classical music scholarship, which is often dominated by discussions of composers.
