Teams and roles for Makenzie Marshall

Overview

Makenzie Marshall is a second-year PhD student at Cardiff University and Aberystwyth University. She received her MA with Distinction in Welsh from Cardiff University in 2022 and her BA in Literary Studies from Missouri Southern State University in 2018. Her doctoral research, funded by the AHRC SWW DTP, focuses on two 15th-century manuscripts (Peniarth 26 and 27ii). Her interests include the Welsh prophetic tradition as well as multilingualism and expressions of nationalism in medieval manuscripts. In addition to her academic work, she is also an author of Welsh-inspired fantasy fiction.

Prophetic poetry in Peniarth 26 and 27ii: transcription, translation, and exploration of language and intent

Peniarth 26 and 27ii are 15th century Welsh manuscripts significant for their high volume of prophetic materials. Despite some of the manuscripts’ content being well-studied, very little research has been undertaken focusing on the manuscripts themselves and how they fit into the broader Welsh manuscript and vaticination traditions, and there are very few transcriptions or edited editions available from either manuscript. This project will weave together a material analysis of the manuscripts—considering palaeography and codicology—with a consideration of the language(s) used in each manuscript to determine the context and functionality of the prophecies featured in both Peniarth 26 and 27ii. In this project, the two manuscripts will be deeply investigated through a series of studies: script and scribal hand analysis, the usage of mono- versus multilingualism, the use of translation, and the presentation and composition of each manuscript. Additionally, through careful investigation of select transcriptions and translations of prophetic poetry and prose, this thesis will compare the vaticination present in Peniarth 26 and 27ii with the Welsh tradition, using philology to date its content.
