Teams and roles for Supriya Misra

Overview

I am a mature student who spent over 20 years in finance before deciding to retrain as a university lecturer in history, politics, and war studies. It has been quite a shift, but one I am genuinely excited about.

I completed my BA Honours in History with a First, followed by an MA in Naval History (Merit). I also hold professional finance qualifications, including CeMAP (Merit), FPC, DipFA, and a TEFL Level 5. My finance background has actually proved useful in understanding how economic pressures shape political and military decisions.

My PhD examines Britain's nuclear independence during the Cold War, with a focus on the complex relationship between sovereignty and reliance on American technology and NATO. It is fascinating how nations claim independence while depending heavily on allies, a tension that has repeatedly appeared throughout modern history.

I want to teach in a way that connects historical events to current issues, drawing on both academic research and practical experience from my previous career.

Biography

Currently working as a tutor, teaching History, English, War Studies, and exam preparation to students at various levels. This role allows for direct engagement with learners whilst developing teaching skills and refining pedagogical approaches ahead of transitioning into university lecturing.

Prior to this, over 20 years were spent working in the financial services sector, where roles included financial advising, investment banking, compliance, and mortgage consultancy. This career provided strong analytical skills and an understanding of how economic factors influence broader social and political developments.

The decision to retrain came from a long-standing passion for history and politics. My academic journey began with a BA Honours in History, where I achieved a First Class Honours, followed by an MA in Naval History, which I completed with Merit. A Teaching English as a Foreign Language Level 5 qualification was also obtained to broaden teaching capabilities.

Currently undertaking PhD research examining Britain's nuclear independence from the Polaris era through to the Trident decision, exploring the relationship between national sovereignty and alliance dependencies during the Cold War. This research builds on interests in military history, international relations, and how strategic decisions are shaped by political and economic realities.
