Laura Shipsey

Ms Laura Shipsey

Research student

Overview

Laura Shipsey is a second year PhD candidate in composition at Cardiff University, kindly supported by a School of Music studentship, under the supervision of Professor Arlene Sierra and Dr David Beard. Her research explores approaches to musical form, multiplicity, and networks, endeavouring to foreground character and connectivity as agents of line and structure, as alternatives to more traditional notions of development. Wider research interests include the role of change in our experience of time, relationships between sound and sight, alternative forms of notation, and improvisation as collaborative composition.

Laura's work has been performed by ensembles and artists including the Alpaca Ensemble, Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra, Cambridge, Heidelberg, Montpellier Youth Orchestra, City of Bristol Brass Band, Taceti Ensemble, pianist Ana Beatriz Ferreira and violinist Fenella Humphreys. Most recently The Time Being for sinfonietta, and Crossing Songs for high soprano and sinfonietta were performed by the Britten Pears Contemporary Ensemble, conducted by Jonathan Berman, with soprano Emily Thorner, at  Aldeburgh Festival 2022.
