Overview
I am a lecturer in the Architectural, Civil, and Environmental Engineering Department at the Cardiff School of Engineering. I conduct fundamental and applied research in structural health monitoring (SHM) and computational analysis for civil infrastructures. In the aspect of applied research, I am experienced in full-scale dynamic testing of structures and have contributed to a series of research projects and consultancy projects on the structural model updating and SHM of various structural systems, such as tall buildings, long-span bridges (e.g., Tsing Ma Bridge, Ting Kau Bridge, and Kap Shui Mun Bridge), railway track systems (both ballasted and non-ballasted tracks), and railway vehicles (including conventional cars, high-speed trains and magnetic levitation trains) following model-based, model-free (data-driven AI-based) and hybrid (physics-informed learning) approaches.
In fundamental research, I am interested in Bayesian analysis, uncertainty quantification, structural dynamics, structural mechanics, modal analysis, optimization techniques, surrogate metamodeling, sensor optimization, advanced signal processing, linear and nonlinear finite element modelling, and digital twinning of infrastructures. I am currently a reviewer for many highly-rated top journals in the areas of civil, structural, and general engineering, such as Structural Health Monitoring, Engineering Structures, Advances in Structural Engineering, etc. My research has garnered recognition from peers and examining bodies, such as the 2021 CityU Outstanding Research Thesis Award, The August 2022 Editor’s Featured Paper Award, The 2022 Best Paper of the Year Award (Structural Control and Health Monitoring) from Engineering Structures (Elsevier); The 2023 Structural Excellence R&D Grand Award from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and many others. I have also participated actively in securing research funds of over £1,000,000.

Research Group Membership
I am a member of the Computational Mechanics and Engineering AI (CMAI) at Cardiff School of Engineering which is headed by Prof Haijiang Li.
CMAI has established its international stand by developing next-generation smart computational engineering solutions to enable the digital transformation of built environments. CMAI’s physics and mechanics informed Engineering AI, which is data-driven, enabling smart materials, structure and digital twin development, aligns well with major funding priorities. The research substantializes domain-oriented AI algorithms to make a breakthrough towards generic, responsible and explainable AI, to enable human-centred digitalization for the built environment.
CMAI focuses on three main areas:
- Computational models for advanced smart materials
- Computational models for advanced structures and meta-structures
- Advanced BIM and Physics informed Digital Twins

Teaching
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy revolves around inquiry-based and collaborative learner-oriented pedagogies. The learning approach I practice not only aids learners in critical thinking and in creating unique ideas but also provides them with an “across-all” learning range, which is important for today’s engineering world. The learner-facilitator partnership that ensues from this has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from learners and administrators in my teaching career.
