Overview

Johannes Benedikt received the Dipl.-Ing. Degree in electrical engineering from the University of Ulm, Germany in 1997 and shortly after he started a PhD course at Cardiff University. During his PhD project he developed a £0.5M research project with Nokia on RF power amplifiers and took on the position of senior research associate at Cardiff University starting at October 2000. He was awarded a PhD degree in 2002 and was appointed as a Lecturer in 2004 and a Senior Lecturer from August 2009. Following his success in research and engagement activities with industry he was awarded a personal chair in May 2010.

He has a strong industrial background working together with DaimlerChrysler, Siemens, Robert Bosch, Nokia, Agilent, Tektronix, Mitsubishi Electric and Huawei. He has successfully submitted four international patents in Europe, North America and parts of Asia with his patents in the area of high-frequency measurement systems resulting in the formation of a university spin-out in 2008. In April 2009 he took on the position of a CTO at Mesuro Ltd, leading the commercial introduction of new measurement solutions that enable systematic waveform engineering at RF and microwave frequencies. Following the company acquisition by Focus Microwave Group he has returned to research at Cardiff University.

His research focuses on

  • wideband and pulsed load-pull instrumentation and
  • application of low-power RF irradiation on human cells in collaboration with School of Medical.

With regards to the second topic, the impact on human cancer cells has been of particular focus. Here, modulated RF signals at power levels that maintain a temperature below 40 degree Celcius are utilised to reduce the growth of cancarous tissues. The achieved promising results have lead to a new patent application and an on-going commercialisation effort.

Research

His research on active load-pull systems at the Centre for High Frequency Engineering enjoys strong participation from industry. Resulting in numerous research and development projects with internationally leading companies in Asia, North America and Europe.

Here, his research interests are focused on large-signal measurement systems at RF and high frequencies, large-signal device characterisation including novel active harmonic source- & load-pull systems, and the development of efficient and linear high power amplifiers for the mobile telecommunication sector. Since 2000 he has been involved in the development of a number of time-domain characterisation and active harmonic load pull systems.

A more recent research focuses on the interaction between human cells an RF irradiation that is similar to the RF signals generated by smartphones. The work is carried out in collaboration with the School of Medicin at Cardiff University. In the last few years a particular focus has been the investigation on suppressing growth of cancerous tissue through RF irradiation. The promising results have lead to a new patent application for a new method to treat cancer tumours. On-going research projects aim at identifying the exact mechanism that lead to cancer cell death at low RF radiation levels.
