Overview
Shannu is a Clinical Reader and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric dentistry at Cardiff University. Her main interests are dental education, clinical care of paediatric patients and supporting staff and students' wellbeing. As the President elect of British Society of Paediatric Dentistry she continues to be an advocate of oral health of children in the UK.
Shannu has a Masters in Clinical Dentistry and a Masters in Medical Education. She is the Lead for Paediatric dentistry, School of Dentistry, Cardiff University 2019 to current, and led paediatric outreach placements from 2014-2024. Shannu is active in clinical teaching and assessment and holds a Senior fellowship of Higher Education Academy and Fellowship of Academy of Medical Educators. She is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons for MPaed dent Speciality examinations, has till recently been an external examiner for Liverpool University and for Leeds University.
Shannu completed her Speciality training obtaining a MPaed Dent of Royal College of Surgeons and continued to train obtaining a Fellowship (Paed Dent) of the Royal College of Surgeons and was appointed an Honorary Consultant. Her clinical interests include provision of specialist treatment under local and inhalation sedation; and dental care of medically compromised children under local and general anaesthesia at Dental hospital, Cardiff and Childrens Hospital for Wales. She actively trains future specialists as a clinical and educational supervisor.
Shannu has an interest in support and wellbeing of staff and students. She was the Director of Staff and Student matters 2020-2023 and established pathways for staff and student support and promotion of Equality Diversity and Inclusion. She has established an international Community of Practice on resilience and wellbeing with Association of Dental Education of Europe. She has initiated a voluntary community oral health promotion programme called Talking teeth.
