Dr Henry Brown
(he/him)
BA MSt PhD
Lecturer in Modern European History
Research
I am interested in the intersection of war and culture in the twentieth century. My expertise is in the militarisation of antifascist politics in Interwar Europe and the resulting tensions and ambiguities between thought and action. My postgraduate research, which formed the basis of my first article in Contemporary European History, examined the growing ascendancy of military values within the Spanish anarchist movement during the Spanish Civil War (1936-9), despite its long history of antimilitarism. Following this line of enquiry further, my doctoral research explored the efforts of Spanish Republicans at creating an antifascist military culture within the Popular Army – a project which proved rich in ideological, material, and cultural contradictions. Since completing my doctorate, my research has moved into the Spanish Left’s efforts at constructing a counterhegemonic cultural landscape in twentieth-century Spain and the entanglement of these projects with attitudes to race, gender, community, and confessional practice.
Teaching
I am currently teaching a module on modern Jewish history (Jews, Europe and the World) and will be contributing to Making of the Modern World as well as the Dark Twentieth Century.
