Overview

I am a PhD student with Cardiff University's School of Psychology and supervised by Professor Petroc Sumner and Dr Georgina Powell. My research focus is on sensory hypersensitivity to discover what aspects of the sensory environment causes the intense discomfort experienced and how these change across areas of neurodiversity, medical conditions, and acquired conditions. My research also involves the development of a new scale to measure sensory hypersensitivity which can be used across populations and will allow for more specific and detailed patterns of sensory hypersensitivity to be measured.

My research is also led by the lived experiences and opinions of those who experience sensory hypersensitivity to allow the voice of the public to shape my research in a way which best reflects their lived experiences.

Research

The sensory environment around us is one of the most important parts of life with our environment shaping the way we live and experience life through our senses of hearing, sight, touch, smell, and taste. My PhD research focuses on sensory hypersensitivity where individuals experience intense discomfort in response to sensory stimuli.

My current research focuses on the factors and subtypes of sensory hypersensitivity to discover what parts of the environment people find most distressing and uncomfortable which will be used to develop a new scale, the Cardiff Hypersensitivity Scale (CHYPS) to measure sensory hypersensitivity in a way that allows for more individualised patterns of sensory hypersensitivity to be measured. These more individualised patterns will be used to discover any existing patterns of subtypes of sensory hypersensitivity across many areas of neurodiversity such as Autism and ADHD, medical conditions such as Depression, and acquired conditions such as brain injuries or PTSD.

To ensure that my research reflects peoples’ experiences of sensory hypersensitivity as accurately to lived experiences as possible, my research is built and led by qualitative data from the public and input by consultants who experience sensory hypersensitivity themselves.

Teaching

As a Postgraduate Tutor I teach first year undergraduate psychology students in weekly tutorials which are a combination of teaching core skills such as scientific report writing and statistics as well as student led discussions on topic such as individual differences and the benefits of qualitative and quantitative research.

In addition to teaching, I also mark students’ exams, scientific reports, and poster presentations. I provide written feedback on all marked assignments and provide verbal feedback in one-to-one feedback sessions throughout semester one and two.
