Overview
I am a Professor of Statistics and Data Science, with a research portfolio that spans optimization, linear algebra, and operational research. My work bridges multiple disciplines within mathematics, focusing on large-scale, data-driven, and computationally-intensive problems. I am particularly interested in developing predictive AI models, leveraging advanced statistical techniques and optimization methods to solve complex real-world challenges. I have collaborated with organizations such as the NHS, Welsh Ambulance Service Trust, Airbus, and the Office for National Statistics, applying my research to areas with significant societal impact. My current research centers on matrix optimization problems and their applications in statistics.
In addition to my research, I am deeply committed to innovative and impactful teaching. I have made significant contributions to the pedagogy of the subject area haven written publications on diagnostic testing, mathematics support, the National Student Survey and Teaching Excellence Framework. I am on the steering group for the sigma (the UK network for excellence in mathematics and statistics support) special interest group in statistics and serve as external examiner for statistics/data science taught programmes at several UK universities.
I am Deputy Head of the School of Mathematics and I lead its Statistics Research Group. I am Cardiff's Turing University Network Lead and am Academic Lead of Welsh Crucible.
