Overview
I have been employed at Cardiff since 1977 having graduated with an LLB from the University of London (through study at the then Kingston Polytechnic) in 1972. I obtained an LLM, also from London, in 1974. I retired from my position as a Senior Lecturer in Law in 2019 but I maintain contact with the School as an LLM teacher. I have lectured and tutored in several subjects over the years but in later years prior to retirement I tutored in Commercial Law on the LLB and lectured and tutored in International Sales and the Law of Carriage of Goods for the LLM International Commercial and Shipping Law Routes. I was also for some time the Route Convenor of the LLM International Commercial Law Route and the Director of Postgraduate Taught Studies.
My main research interest for much of my career has lain generally in the law of carriage of goods with particular interest in freight forwarding, international carriage of goods by road and multimodal transport. My main publications include: 'The Divided Heart of CMR,' (1979) 14 European Transport Law, 687-720; Introduction to the Law of Carriage of Goods, with C. Cashmore, Sweet and Maxwell, 1989; Contracts for the Carriage of Goods, (ed. D Yates), Part 6 (Multimodal Transport) and Part 7 (Freight Forwarding), LLP, 1993, Messent and Glass, CMR : Contracts for the Carriage of Goods by Road, 4th ed. with A. Messent, Informa Law 2017 and Freight Forwarding and Multimodal Transport Contracts, 2nd ed. Informa Law, 2012. Several articles of mine have also been published in Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly and Shipping and Transport International. For this last journal I was also a member of the advisory panel. I continue to engage in research and I am currently preparing (with A Messent) a new edition of Messent and Glass as well as assisting, as part of a team, the Institute of International Transport Law (Rouen) in developing a long term research project on the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road.
