Overview

Professor Manu Haddad, FIET, FLSW, obtained a first degree in Electrical Engineering from the Ecole Nationale Polytechnique of Algiers, Algeria. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in High Voltage Engineering in 1990 from Cardiff University. He then took up a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, working on National Grid and EPSRC funded projects to carry out investigations on lightning performance of Zinc Oxide surge arresters and overvoltage protection of electrical networks. In 1995, he was appointed as a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in electrical engineering at Cardiff University, with responsibility for High Voltage Research and lecturing duties in high voltage engineering, power systems, electromagnetics, mathematics and electrical circuits. In 2003, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer with responsibility and, in 2006, he was promoted to a personal chair in high voltage engineering and established the Advanced High Voltage Engineering Research Centre, growing to 6 academics, in addition to 7 externally funded Research Associates and some 15 PhD students at any time. Since 2004, his high voltage research Centre was selected as one four University Centres funded by National Grid through a framework agreement to research into transmission networks and transients. The link with National Grid is now extended to a university-wide scheme.

In 2011, he established a unique university research centre, the Morgan-Botti Lightning laboratory (MBLL), in collaboration with AIRBUS Group. The centre’s research activities are currently focussed on protection against lightning of aircraft and wind turbines. In particular, the performance of carbon composite materials and components for aerospace applications are researched.

Professor Haddad has published an IET textbook (power series 41) “Advances in High Voltage Engineering” and over 300 papers in the most regarded Journals and international conferences in the high voltage research area. Prof. Haddad, with colleagues and PhD students, has won 13 paper prizes, including prizes from IET/IEE (De Ferranti Premium) and international conferences. Over 30 researchers/PhD students have completed their research programmes under his supervision. His research interests in the power area are in lightning overvoltage protection, insulation systems, alternative gases to SF6, insulation coordination, earthing and safety of electrical systems.

Professor Haddad is/was a member of several international technical working groups (CIGRE: A3.25, C4.26,, C4.408, C4.501, C4.03C4/A3.53, C4.33, C4.55,C4.57, D1.56, D1.67), international conference committees, and Standards committees (Committee Member of International Electrotechnical Commission IEC TC37 (2003-); IEC ACTAD -representing TC37 for the last 6 years, British Standard Association, BSI PEL/1 and PEL/2 (2002-), BSI PEL42). He also sits on the technical / scientific advisory boards for two large industrial projects (National Grid and SuperGrid Institute in France). Professor Haddad has/had Visiting Professor positions in China, Algeria, Malaysia and Japan.
