Overview

I am a part-time Teaching Associate and part-time PhD student at the School of Biosciences. My teaching is largely on the subject of human Anatomy, which I deliver to Biomedical Science, Medical and Dental students.

Conversely my PhD research is on the use of oncotropic bacteria to deliver shRNA-mediated knockdown of oncogenes in cancer.

Research

My research looks at the use of oncotropic (cancer-seeking) bacteria configured for stable release of short hairpin RNA against oncogenes in the treatment of cancer. Many cancer therapies in use today lack specificity to tumour cells, and therefore deliver numerous off-target effects and poor patient tolerance. Targeted therapies are often costly, have limited applicability based on cancer type, and are less targeted than their namesake suggests. Oncotropic bacteria selectively colonise tumours over healthy tissue, often lacking the ability to survive away from the tumour microenvironment. Bacteria infecting tumours encourages immune cell infiltration that concurrently removes tumour cells and bacteria. During the process of infection, oncotropic bacteria configured with shRNA against key tumour growth drivers like cMyc or immune suppressors like PD-L1 may enhance tumour cell death or immune clearance. My aim is to investigate the interactions between tumour cells from multiple cancer types and various strains of modified and attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium.

Teaching

I've been supporting anatomy teaching at the School of Biosciences since 2017 in one guise or another. I am currently involved in the delivery of anatomy-based modules in each of the three years of the BSc Biomedical Science programme, as well as early years MBBCh and BDS programmes. Additionally I support teaching across several second year modules in areas such as neuroanatomy and histology. I have a deep passion for the kind of experiential, collaborative learning offered on our modules, and aim to fully utilise the advantages offered by these strategies in my teaching. I also believe in the importance of working with students, giving and recieving feedback on teaching and learning, and fostering community amongst students and staff.

In 2022 I completed the Anatomy Training Programme Module 4: Neuroanatomy offered by the Anatomical Society.

In 2025 I was made FHEA by Advanced HE, indicating my adherence to the UK Professional Standards Framework for Higher Education teaching and learning.
