Overview

I am an experienced medical educator with a broad teaching portfolio, primarily specialising in teaching systems physiology in the early years of the MBBCh programme. I lead on a two week teaching block ('case) in year 1 in Cardiology and at the end of year 2 focusing on managing the acutely unwell patient. I have worked for several years with the South Wales Fire Rescue Service, South Wales Police, Welsh Ambulance Service and Medserve Cymru providing large scale mass casualty Road Traffic Collision Simulation training according to JESIP principles. I also work with the United Kingdom Rescue Organsiation (UKRO) and ProjectEdward helping improve road safety and patient care at the roadside.

Biography

I am currently a Reader in the Centre for Medical Education. I have been at Cardiff since June 2014 as the Year 2 Director for the MBBCh programme (2014-2022), Deputy Progamme Director (2023-2026) and most recently Small Group Learning Lead (2026-present) overseeing and implementing the new pedagogical framework for teaching 'cases' in the MBBCh programme (cTBL). I currently lead on several aspects of teaching in the undergraduate medicine programme, particularly in the early years of the course covering systems physiology, acute illness, transfusion training and pre-hospital care. Since 2020 I have headed up a team from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Police, Welsh Ambulance Service Trust and MEDSERVE Cymru involved in delivering multiagency road traffic collsion simulations.

I am a member of the United Kingdom Rescue Organisation Academy (UNITED KINGDOM RESCUE ORGANISATION) and regularly work with #ProjectEdward (Project EDWARD - Project EDWARD) on issues relating to improving road safety and reducing road deaths.

From 1995-2014 I worked at the University of South Wales as the Course Leader for Applied Sports Science (1995-1997), BSc Biology (1997-2007) and BSc Medical Sciences (2007-2014). During my time at USW I designed and implemented the first graduate entry for medicine (GEM) progamme in Wales successfully delivering on this widening access stratergy as part of the Memorandum of Understanding between USW and Cardiff University. At USW I also designed and implemented the first Scientific Diving Programme for adult learners leading diving expeditions to Indonesia, Honduras, Cuba and Egypt.

In 2002 I took a six month sabbatical having been invited to work as an associate professor for the Semester at Sea Progamme (Semester at Sea | Multi-Country Study Abroad) on the round the world voyage of the MS World Explorer.  I also took short sabbaticals in the winters of 1999-2003 to work as a wildlife guide for Society Expeditions on the MS World Discoverer in Antarctica and the Russan Far East. I also worked as a TV presenter for the NOW channel (part f the TWI group) on a number of programmes from 2000-2001).

As a postdoctorate I worked at the University of California, Irvine from 1991-1994 working on thermal adaptations to muscle function. During my tme at Irvine I became actively involved in the Cooperative Outdoor Programme giving undergraduate students the opportunity to visit the outdoors making full use of the University of California's Natural Resrve System.

In the early years of my career I graduated with a first class honours in Marine Biology from Liverpool University in 1987 and a PhD in marine physiology which took me on the EPOS Antarctic expeditions of the Polarstern with the British Antarctic Survey in 1989 and the Pacific Gamefish Foundation in Hawaii in 1990.
