Overview

I am a Senior Clinical Lecturer and an Associate Specialist and my interest in medical research stems from translating research into improved patient care.

I am an experienced Chief Investigator of clinical trials and experimental medicine studies in the field of infection, immunity and vaccine strategy.

My research at the Division of Infection and Immunity includes studies examining differential immune responses to vaccines, T cell responses to viruses and vaccines, bacterial infection, anti-microbial resistance and evaluation of novel antimicrobial agents and rapid diagnostics for detecting infection.

I work closely with the Spiller lab and T Cell research lab at Cardiff University and the R&D team at Cardiff and the Vale University health board, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University health board and have an Honorary contract with Public Health Wales. I am supported by Health and Care Research Wales.

As a clinician I work in the field of Sexual health and HIV, at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University health board.

Teaching

I teach undergraduate medical students and doctors in training in the field of HIV medicine and sexual health.

I supervise and teach undergraduate students completing a placement training year in Bioscience/Biomedical Sciences during their research modules in the field of infectious disease.

I supervise and teach medical students who decide to study for an intercalated degree in the field of infection and immunity.

Biography

I have a translational and experimental medicine research portfolio which focuses on improving our understanding of infections, vaccination and the corresponding immune response. I also have an interest in developing novel, rapid diagnostics for infection. This includes studies in Cardiff University, University of Oxford, Imperial College, Cardiff and the Vale University health board, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University health board and NIH.

I was born in Wales and raised in the Valleys of South Wales, before studying Medicine and Physiological Sciences at the University of Oxford. Following my medical qualification and training, I went on to complete a doctorate in the Department of Human Anatomy and Genetics, University of Oxford in the field of development and genetics with Dr Zoltan Molnar and Professor Colin Blakemore.

I have worked in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University health board for 19 years and I am an Associate Specialist and the departmental lead for research. I was made an Honorary lecturer at Cardiff University, School of Medicine in 2012 with a teaching role primarily and have now moved to a research focused role and work closely with a clinical research team at the Clinical Research Facility, Cardiff and the Vale University health board and collaborators at Cardiff University, University of Oxford, Imperial College, Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of Birmingham and NIH.

I also have an interest in working with industry to deliver research trials with benefits to patients in Wales and was Principal Investigator for the OMICRON vaccine trial in Wales in my role as an Honorary Associate Specialist with Public Health Wales. I co-supervise post-graduate students and play a role in teaching in the field of infection. I enjoy leading outreach activities in the field of infection and immunity.

Engagement

I enjoy outreach activities relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial infections. I have been involved in a large National outreach programme with The Ineos Oxford Institute (University of Oxford) which reaches out to the public to discuss the threat AMR poses to society, particularly in the field of sexual health. I also lead an outreach project for Cardiff University called 'BBV and Me', which aims to raise awareness of the blood borne viruses (BBV) called HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Our outreach acitivities discuss the aetiology and mode of transmission of BBV infections in a community setting with heterosexual people aged over 40 years of age. We discuss barriers to HIV testing with health care professionals. This is an important project implemented to support the All Wales HIV Action Plan and reduce late diagnosis of BBV. Activities are funded by an industrial partner.
