Overview
I am a PhD student in the School of Biosciences at Cardiff University studying developmental neuroscience. Funded by the Hodge Foundation, my research takes place within the Neuroscience and Mental Health Innovation Institute and the Hodge Centre for Translational Neuroscience, located within the Hadyn Ellis Medical Research Facility.
My project focuses on the development of GABAergic interneurons and the role the cortex plays in their diversification in the developing brain. This research has implications for neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia and epilepsy. I use forebrain organoids, derived from human pluripotent stem cells, as models to conduct my research.

Research
I've always been interested in the way cells make decisions; how do they know to differentiate, proliferate, or migrate? The current subject of my research is cortical GABAergic interneurons which follow a protracted migration and differentiation pathway from the ventral telencephalon to the developing cortex in the human foetal brain. Much remains unknown about these cells, which are vastly diverse and span many subtypes which only emerge late in development. The goal of my research is to uncover how environmental cues in the cortex might influence the fate decisions and diversification of interneurons, during their development.
