Overview

I am a second year NERC Red-ALERT funded PhD student with the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). I completed my undergraduate and masters degrees at Cardiff University, graduating with a BSc (Genetics) and MRes.

Freshwater is the most severely impacted environment in terms of biodiversity loss, with rivers across the UK coming under increasing pressure from anthropogenic pollution. The River Ely in particular has a history of poor water quality, with the Afon Clun tributary being particularly polluted. My PhD project is looking to characterise the relationship between the distribution of pollutants and changes in biodiversity along the length of the River Ely from source to Cardiff Bay using eDNA.

My supervisory team includes Dr Pablo Orozco ter Wengel, Dr Carsten Muller, Dr Frank Hailer, Dr. Claus Svendsen and Dr Charith Perera, and I work in collaboration with Gail Davies-Walsh at Afonydd Cymru.

Biography

Education

2024 - current - PhD Researcher, Cardiff University

  • I am completing a NERC Red-ALERT funded project with the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) looking to characterise the relationship between the distribution of pollutants and changes in biodiversity along the length of the River Ely from source to Cardiff Bay using eDNA.

2023 - 2024 - MRes, Cardiff University

  • My project investigated the relationship between the transcription factors SHOOTMERISTEMLESS (STM) and PLETHORA7 (PLT7), and how this impacts stem cell pluripotency in the shoot apical meristem of Arabidopsis thaliana. This project also aimed to use Gibson Assembly cloning to create a PLT7-GR inducible overexpression construct.
  • Awarded Best MRes Research Project

2020 - 2023 - BSc (Genetics), Cardiff University

  • Completed my Final Year Project on examining phosphate as a currency that mediates interactions between cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae.

Experience

2021 - Biotechnology Engineer Intern

  • My project focused on the use of fungal mycelium for the biodegradation of plastic.
