Senior Lecturer
Overview
I am a registered midwife and Programme Lead for Midwifery, with a clinical background in complex maternity care and labour ward coordination.
My teaching expertise focuses on enhanced maternity care, obstetric emergencies, and the legal and professional frameworks underpinning maternity and wider healthcare practice. I am committfaed to supporting students to develop both clinical competence and critical decision-making skills, ensuring they are well prepared for the complexities of contemporary midwifery practice.
Alongside this, I have a strong commitment to inclusive education and am actively engaged in work around decolonising the curriculum and advancing anti-racist practice. I am particularly interested in how midwifery education can better reflect diverse experiences, challenge structural inequities, and prepare students to provide culturally safe and equitable care.
Teaching
I am module lead for HC3357 - Consolidation of Midwfiery Practice, and I teach across all years of the midwifery programme.
Biography
I qualified as a midwife in 1996 and have had a varied and rewarding clinical career, working across a range of hospitals and maternity settings. During this time, I developed extensive experience in different areas of practice, including my roles as a Labour Ward Coordinator and Supervisor of Midwives. I particularly valued working in complex clinical care, where I was able to support women and families experiencing higher-risk pregnancies.
I moved into midwifery education in 2013, joining the University of the West of England, where I undertook a range of teaching roles, as well as Admissions Tutor. This role provided valuable insight into student recruitment, widening participation, and supporting students throughout their educational journey.
Alongside my academic work, I worked with Lyons Davidson Solicitors in Bristol as a Health Records Analyst and Midwifery Advisor, where I contributed specialist knowledge to the review and interpretation of maternity care in a legal context.
In 2021, I joined Cardiff University, where I am currently Programme Lead for Midwifery. In this role, I work closely with colleagues and students to ensure a high-quality and supportive learning experience. I also lead on initiatives to decolonise the midwifery curriculum and embed inclusive, anti-racist approaches within teaching and learning. This work is centred on creating a curriculum that reflects diverse perspectives and prepares students to deliver equitable, culturally safe care.
